Connecticut Pie Co, at 811 Mosby Street (circa 1903)
Better than that ugly apartment building there now… it needs to be demolished…
Wow what a grading they did on the street!
I’m wondering if that address is correct. If you look at the current 809 Mosby Street, it sits high above the street. It was there before the street grade was lowered in the 1880’s. I don’t see it in the picture as being above street grade like the current 811 Mosby St. is. There’s something wrong with this picture.
For what it’s worth, this pie company was still around in 1923. The directory for that year lists the Connecticut Pie Company (run by a widow, Mrs. M.J. Chamberlain) at 611 North 17th Street.
The address seems to be right and the house next to the building looks like the boarded up one next to the apartments. How do you know the street was graded in the 1880s?
It was not uncommon for photos of the period to be tweaked or altered (with composite arrangements) in order to offer a more cohesive or “legible” presentation. This might be an example of that, because the benefit to the viewer is an uncomplicated vantage point that allows the trucks and delivery mules to be out front flanking the windows and staff.
