Alley Rally 2014 clears sofas, mattresses and brush

As you walk around our neighborhood in coming days, you might notice that it is perceptibly brighter, cleaner and less cluttered.
Thanks to the efforts of Church Hill Association and particularly John Johnson, the popular Alley Rally was revived on Saturday. Three teams of CHA volunteers accompanied by three City of Richmond trash trucks devoted Saturday morning to cleaning the alleys of Church Hill.
Volunteers from CHA met at 8:30 AM Saturday morning, and systematically combed the alleys throughout our community up to M street before handing off the trucks in late morning. Without going into specifics of what was removed, we can happily report that many sofas, mattresses and piles of brush have been relocated to a permanent home.
Thanks to all who helped out with particular thanks to the City of Richmond Department of public Works for providing the trucks and two man crews.
This is what CHA should be doing more of. Thanks to Dr. Cooper for expanding the scope of the organization into some less polarizing activities.

The CHA Used to do Alley Rallies twice a year. We would take anything except construction debris. I agree that the association should be concentrating on more of this type of community activity.
I was so filthy after my first alley rallie, I washed off in the back yard with the garden hose before getting in my shower! I know how grueling it can be, so THANK YOU everybody that worked it!!
Thanks for continuing a tradition that CHA has done in the past. Sorry folks can no longer ride the trash trucks.
Nice picture, thanks to all who helped, and the alley behind me was totally cleaned! (Until a neighbor dumped seven bags next to but not in his super can today…..) I REALLY appreciated the work you guys did on Saturday, THANKS!

Awesome. My bush clippings were suddenly and luckily gone. But how do they know what’s trash and what’s being stored outside? 🙂
I participated in a couple of these rallies some years ago, they’re fun and provide a very necessary service to our neighborhood. The Richmond Rd. dump site no longer takes mattresses, furniture, etc. The Saturday wait time at the Hopkins Rd. site can take 1 to 2 hours to unload, further discouraging folks from responsible disposal of trash. Another point to consider is that many folks don’t have access to pick up trucks/ wagons to transport mattresses, appliances,… to the dump. Yes, I know some people are lazy or just don’t care, but that’s a trait I’ve witnesses across the economic divide. I hope to see more rallies in the future and will gladly participate in the next one. Thanks to all involved this past weekend.
