RECENT COMMENTS
Still trying to figure out how the comments should work here after almost 10 years…
In a time of relative peace and tranquility, I’ve taken the step of updating the site Use Policy. The new language is this:
Abusive comments will not be allowed. Do not be a bully. Do not call people names. Do not be a dick. Don’t be mean. You really don’t have to make the same point over and over and over again. How many ways can I say this? Simply put: even though this is online, please remember that the people you are addressing are your neighbors.
My goal here is to have an online community where everyone feels free to share, without the conversation being dominated by the loudest, the most angry, or the obsessed.
If you have doubt, take it down a notch or two.
If there is a comment that you feel violates this policy, please contact me.
Thanks.

I like it, but don’t remember what the old language was. Where do I find it?
Okay, I found the comment section, but are you deleting the part about anon. postings and other stuff, or just reworking this? Just curious. Thanks.
Well said, wonderful choice of words too. Lovin it
I back this 100%
@crd – Everything after “Abusive comments will not be allowed” is new. I would really like to reboot the culture of the comment section here.
I give you credit, John, you’ve published a lot of cr@p I would not have.
Seems like a good set of guidelines. I’m worried that I might fall under obsessed. I should watch myself, I suppose.
This is a good opportunity to thank you for your hard work on CHPN. It is the model of a great community webpage. Thank you.
This is random and probably unrealistic, but I wish there was a way to carry conversations over to another medium while maintaining privacy.
Having an entire conversation between two or three individuals in the comments section (guilty of this myself…) seems potentially rude/domineering/”obsessed” in that it overshadows other comments, general discussion, etc. But such conversations are usually neighborly/worthwhile and there doesn’t seem to be a good alternative…
I like these just fine, but am wondering about John’s desire to “reboot the culture of the comment section” – what’s your goal? Seems to me you’ve done that with these additions, but do you want something more?
After all, some people aren’t going to recognize themselves as being a dick, no matter what you do.
And now it’s now longer my role to hope for better, I’ll just delete whatever and move on.
John, everyone commenting here realizes that this is a blog. Almost always, one will see all flavors good, bad, and ugly. There is a down-side to editing/diluting the commentary. Those of us who don’t see the original content, don’t get the full sense of passion, anger, frustration, that the commenter is expressing.
One of the beautiful things about CHPN and what I believe sets it apart, is one can see and feel the “raw” emotion in these posts. Some of the other neighborhood blogs are watered down, with few comments and frankly, pretty boring. I can’t say the same for CHPN. Even some of the wildest comments on here contain an element of humor that is pretty valuable and would be unfortunate to lose.
As the creator and moderator of this forum, I understand your frustration but you may “feel” it more than others. Are the comments that offensive that they can’t be published?
I think people need to remember there is a nice way to say something and an in-your-face way to say something. I see quite a few in-your-face type of things – comments that appear to be looking for an argument. It’s not only disheartening to read, but frustrating to those who are interested in reading other points of view. I may have my own opinion but I am open to others as well – that what makes for good decisions. Thanks John for all that you do!
@laura – there have *always* been comments that can’t be published.
I’m not asking folks to not be emotional or passionate, but I would like to see a shift in the baseline tone of some of this – especially before something heated comes up.
As Karen above observes, though, there are “comments that appear to be looking for an argument”, and they usually get it. I know the voices that have been chased out of the site by how “grrrrr” this place gets, and I want it to be different.
I would gladly take boring if it meant more useful and inclusive.
Fun, infuriating, insightful, inspirational, informational and free. Do what you want. Bullies beware..easy enough.
It goes off the rails when knives get sharpened for the person who made the comment, not the comment itself. I’d also like to see an end to ANY racially divisive comment and goes for blacks and whites alike- it usually starts as finger pointing and goes directly downhill from there.
Its a good idea to have some rules to keep things from getting out of hand here. However, i’m not sure why I can’t find any past posts of mine that call into question our council member, Cynthia Newbille. Perhaps the search option only allows one to search up to a certain point? Not that anyone was too interested in what I had to say about CAHN or Newbille in the past anyway, much less read my posts then. Just curious about how far back we can search in the archives John.
Mary Anne – the search only hits the posts, not the comments.
