Anybody else getting poor Verizon reception?
07/12/2014 4:32 PM by John M
Have lived in the Chimborazo area of Church Hill for 6+ months now, never had an issue with cell reception (wife and I both have Verizon) until a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden, our calls are dropping left and right. Day and night from a few weeks ago. Anybody else experiencing this?
TAGGED: question
I know there has been some sun activity going on which may affect satellites? We had Verizon but could never get reception inside the house.
yes! I do! I live at 29th & marshall…same thing here. My hubby works for verizon and his phones drop too.
It’s funny because we have been having similar issues but we’re on sprint. We get bad connection where we can’t hear the other person or they can’t hear us or dropped calls. I’ve been wondering if it was an issue with the iPhone update a couple if months ago because it started not long after.
No problems here with my iPhone 4S. The 4S uses the 3G network, others with more modern phones primarily using the 4G network may have a different experience.
That may be the key. Simple flip cell phones do not seem to work well or at all here even though there is a tower at the Noldes Condo water tower.
On a similar note, we have Comcast with a complete bundle that includes unlimited everything and high speed Internet – wireless WiFi. The modem is on one floor and if I take my computer to another floor and sometimes another room, I loose 1-2 bars! Granted this is a large house with a lot of density but does anyone else have that problem too? Like I said cell phone service in the house is almost non existent.
Yes. Verizon Wireless reception is terrible in certain parts of the Hill. It’s really frustrating when the worst spot is INSIDE your home. Had ATT and it was equally poor. Is there a provider that has good service up here?
We no longer have Verizon but we have had issues with Comcast lately… Our cable frequently pixelates and seems the signal is breaking up. Also, our internet runs slow quite often. Probably not related to the Verizon issue but seems in keeping with the general thread here – anyone else having issues with Comcast?
Kai… Yes, especially on HD stations. I often write it off again with sunspot activity but I have also called their Customer Service (which is absolutely S#!T) and they often tell me they need to do some magical resetting of the system to take care of the problem. The issue I have is that we can’t get dish where our house is sitting and Comcast was the only game in town but now Fios is here yet that seems to have problems too?
Is FIOS available in CH? I’ve been waiting for 5+ years but still nothing. Seems to me you can get either Comcast (horrible) or satellite (not possible for many due to trees/poor signal location).
The best decision I ever made was getting rid of cable. Get yourself a HD OTA antenna. Along with a good HSI connection, you’re golden. SCREW BIG CABLE!

I had the same problem (trees and building locations) but how many channels does the box bring in without cable? I really need to revaluate the situation because after our 2-year contract is up the rates with Comcast go to around $250 per month and we don’t even get premium movie or sports channels.
Verizon ran line covers (squirrel shields) on poles back in July 2011 but never ran the cables through them. There was some battle between Verizon and Comcast where Comcast won bumping Fios out of our area. But something changed recently where Fios is now available and have been running specials in which Comcast is aware of and can not match. When our contract is up in December we are looking into the switch. We have had nothing but problems with Comcast from day one be it billing, appointments, signal outages, or horrid customer service. Don’t ever go on a Chat with them! Think part of it is robo generated answers while the rest you can spend hours saying the same thing over and over and still not get a point across nor get a straight answer.
I’ve always assumed the NIMBYs were behind it. Keeping that new fangled technology out of our neighborhood!
We have Fios on the east side of the 31st and have great service. I know the other side of the street doesn’t have it.
Eric,
It all depends on your particular location/setup. In my case I am able to pull in ~ 15-20 channels including NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, several PBS channels, & a hand-full of other local broadcasts like telemundo, CW, etc. As long as your TV is HD-ready (most newer ones are), a high-def OTA antenna ($5-$10 at Radio Shack, Walmart, etc) should do you just fine. AntennaWeb.org is a great resource where you can enter in your address & see which channels you should be able to get, as well as info on what type of antenna to look for.
I cut the cord about 4 years ago as I was tired of Comcast’s absurd service/costs & I couldn’t be happier. I went from paying ~$160 a month to now paying ~$40/month for DSL internet (Cavalier).
The only thing I’ve missed is the hundreds of wasted hours watching “Pawn Shop” or “Storage Wars” or “Large People Towing Larger Peoples’ Cars”, which is to say I’ve missed nothing!!
I’ve had Verizon cell service for 7 or 8 years. I never dropped a call until now, and have lost three in the last two weeks. I’m also having a problem sending and receiving data on my smartphone. So yes I think there has been some change to the network without updates being sent to our phones. PS- My Fios Cable and Internet is and always has been perfect on Chimborazo Blvd. Never had one service interruption.

This was cross-posted from a post I made on Reddit, and it is exactly as you describe. My wife and I have NEVER had any issue from anywhere in the neighborhood (let alone in our house) until a couple of weeks ago, when it seemingly overnight became impossible to complete a call without going out to the front porch. Our phones are on WiFi at home, so we haven’t noticed a change in data service, but call quality and dependability has dropped through the floor. Not sure who to talk to about it, as I assume it is over the head of anyone I could talk to at Verizon. Anybody with the ear of someone who might have an answer, it would be much appreciated, as we do not have a landline and literally are dropping every call from inside the house lately (33rd St).
Maybe Jennifer McClellan can help..
She’s our representative in the House of Delegates AND an executive with Verizon.
my daughter has sprint and she gets her texts sometimes almost and hour later
Wonder what is different about Church Hill that we are pretty much a Dead Zone for many?
I just moved near the Chimborazo part of Church Hill and have terrible Verizon service from inside my house. Is everyone else still having issues with Verizon?
@J345
Do you have plaster walls? If so, its like being a concrete box. Many people have these problems in older houses including the range of WIFI singals/wireless routers….
