CAR to consider Ocean Grocery mural, new houses on Franklin Street

The agenda for the Tuesday, July 22, 2014 meeting of the Commission of Architectural Review includes a number of local projects:
- 2434-2438 VENABLE ST Demolish retaining wall, grade lot, construct block wall, and paint mural
- 720 N 25TH ST Replace front porch columns and railing
- 2319 M ST Repair deteriorated features and construct new rear addition
- 3107 E MARSHALL ST Construct new rear addition
- 2400 E FRANKLIN ST Construct five new single family dwellings
5 new single family dwellings at 2400 East Franklin Street? Inside what’s there, or in place of what’s there?
2400 is an empty lot

Thank you, John! I was using google maps and it showed me something entirely different, on the SOUTH side of Franklin, and I wasn’t thinking – the even numbers are on the NORTH side of the street. Thanks again.
If there is any justice in Church Hill, everyone opposing the view stuff tonight will also show up tomorrow at CAR to oppose this horrible mural.
CAR on July 22 and if there’s something on the agenda which is objectionable and you can’t get to the meeting, send an email detailing your objection to Ms. Catherine Easterling.
Is there already a design for the proposed mural? I think a well thought out mural would be a huge improvement! There is a lot of focus on the historical value of the buildings and homes throughout the neighborhood. And while those things are important, they aren’t the only things that make up history. A mural, if done with integrity, is a chance to showcase the spirit of the people that make up the community. The people that live in a neighborhood make up its history as much as the bricks boards. But I also like art, so maybe I’m biased…
Mindy, they are trying to get approval for the existing mural shown in the photo above.
I guess I am not understanding why they need to get approval for a mural that’s already there? It was my understanding was to cover what is currently there in addition to removing the retaining wall?
Hi Mindy, They never got approval for the mural in the first place … and the demo/construction that previously occurred. You should call Catherine Easterling if you don’t follow – this place is a menace and open air drug market. This mural contributes to the broken windows crime-incubator effect in their lot. It’s a clear CAR violation and is of dubious quality.
I’ve just seen a few anti-mural comments previously and I don’t see the problem with the artistically done ones. This isn’t one of them clearly. There are a lot of talented artists around, it would be nice to see this one replaced with a better mural.
