Work resumes at 2104-2106 Cedar Street

It looks like work has resumed at 2104-2106 Cedar Street after an almost 6 year delay.
The current structure was begun in November 2008, after the demolition of the longtime vacant double house on the lot.

Oh wow, I had completely forgotten about this until you brought it up. Wonder what happened?
Almost as bad as the yellow building they would start and stop on over the past 6-years at the corner of Fairfield and Mechanicsville Tpk.

Did the vinyl windows on the front of this building pass CAR approval???
Glad they are working on fixing this up though!
@Nearby – Not sure when the windows went it, but when they started this house Union Hill hadn’t been named one of the city’s Old and Historic Districts yet. If the windows were put in before November 2009, they’re grandfathered.
They were put in this year I believe
Keep in mind that the CAR only abides by Old & Historic that they designated as opposed to the National Register Historical District through the National Parks and the Virginia Dept. of Historical Resources (VDHR). Two historical neighborhood titles but the two have nothing to do with one another other than tax credits, and often the boundaries don’t match. The latter being designated in 2001 and O&H was added in 2009. This is unfortunate because often other historical neighborhoods/cities use the Park Services designation as their own avoiding boundary gaps and voids in coverage.
That said, I am sure the windows were added later but because the CAR had approved the original plans in 2008, they would be grandfathered in.

I just looked back at the post from years back and may have been wrong about the windows. Maybe they have just been boarded over the last several years and recently the boards were removed. I’m glad this project has new life!
Seeing this house being worked on is somehow cathartic for me. I have associated this house with the economic downturn more than just about any other in Union Hill. It was like a physical embodiment of the Great Recession. Things are starting to happen again. It’s going to be messy and wonderful.
