Two bikes stolen on 33rd Street
07/24/2014 5:30 PM by John M
We had our bikes stolen from inside our garage, on the 600 block of 33rd St, sometime between July 20 and 22. One was a Schwinn Searcher hybrid, the other a Trek Alpha 4300 mountain bike. Pictures attached.
I would appreciate your posting this to CHPN. We’ve reported it to the police, and definitely want to keep getting the word out to Church Hill citizens to watch their bikes!
Doesn’t every thief in town already have at least two like this? You’d think the market for stolen bikes would be saturated by now. Are people fencing them whole? Fencing the parts? Taking them to the scrapyard?

There’s a kid that hangs out in Shockoe Bottom day and night. He begs for money and food. Often times, looking his 13 years of age, people give him both.
Today, he was seen on a bike, probably stolen, and tried to rob an innocent woman of her phone. He’s not smart enough to move along, as I’ve seen him riding by a few minutes ago.
He is trouble.
The police have been called. Should I CPS be called next? He’s often down here when bartenders are leaving work (3am).
I’ll check photos of these posted bikes the next time I see him ride by.
According to the officer who responded to our report, the indication is that these are kids who are stealing the bikes and taking them for a “joy ride” before dumping them. Apparently, the first thing they do is spray paint them so they are harder to identify. So please be on the look out for anything that looks suspicious (like a kid on a nice bike that has an obviously bad paint job); our bikes probably don’t look like this anymore 🙁
@2, there’s a curfew law, I’m not sure but think it’s 11 p.m. for people under 18. You might check with the police but if this kid is under 18, you should call and report him as out after hours.
Not sure what you are referring to with CPS – child protective services? Wouldn’t the cops involve them anyway? I’m not sure what the procedure is there.
2 suggestions:
SECURE YOUR BIKES…if they are not secured, you are giving them away. u are not on the prairie, stop being so trusting.
engrave your name or address somewhere on the bike so u can identify if found.
DEVELOPING NEWS: people steal EVERYDAY…..u are not exempt because you are a nice guy!
One of the bikes (the Trek) has been recovered! Thank you to the amazing Richmond police officers that serve Church Hill. Still hopeful that the Schwinn will come home, too!
We are still looking…..
