Inmates moved to new Richmond jail over the weekend
07/29/2014 8:29 AM by John M
The new Richmond City Jail proposed by the Jones administration just over 3 years ago is officially open.
Sheriff C.T. Woody said deputies finished moving the last of the 945 inmates to the 1,032-bed Richmond City Justice Center on Saturday.
The six-story, 430,000-square-foot, air-conditioned jail along Fairfield Way replaces one roughly half its size that was built in the 1960s. That facility, which lacked air-conditioning, had long suffered from significant maintenance issues and routinely held between 1,300 and 1,500 inmates even though it was constructed to accommodate 880.

So the old jail routinely held up to 1500 inmates, and they built the new one to house just over 1000?
At least they’ll be air conditioned when overcrowded.
@Spacecat… maybe they hope that falling crime rates will cause it to work out so they don’t need as many beds. But I would think population growth could easily cancel that out.
I think that calling it the “Richmond Justice Center” will sufficiently deter the likes of Lex Luther, Joker and The Penguin…although I hope there is enough parking for Wonder Woman’s invisible jet
I’m sure they’re still holding people in the old one, too. Just spread them out among the two buildings instead of all crammed into one.
The Richmond Justice Center is fondly known in much of the city’s east end as THE JONES HOTEL.
