Summertime at the Robinson
From the Summer 2014 Newsletter from Robinson Theater:
Dear Friends,
School may be out, but summer is in full swing at the Robinson Theater! On any given afternoon, our building is abuzz with activity. Check out what’s on our calendar this summer!
We kicked off the summer with our annual Block Party where more than 800 Church Hill residents came to the Robinson Theater for an evening of fun and family-friendly recreation. We will end the summer with our annual Showtime at the Robinson–Church Hill’s local talent show.
Thanks to new collaborations with local, non-profit organizations, the Robinson Theater is meeting the needs of Church Hill residents through innovative programming unlike anything our community has seen in recent history. Whether you are a resident of Church Hill or a supporter of the Robinson–or both–I encourage you to get involved with the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center this summer.
Sincerely,
Betsy Hart
Executive Director

Pop-Up Markets
The Robinson Theater is excited to host a weekly Pop-Up Market and nutrition pilot program. This program not only brings education and awareness about the benefits of healthy eating, but makes fresh and local produce accessible and affordable to Church Hill residents. (SNAP is accepted by many of the vendors.)
We are thankful for partnerships with GrowRVA, Urban Farming (an initiative of CHAT, Church Hill Activities and Tutoring), ClarissaB Designs (handmade items from a Church Hill resident), Bon Secours’ Class-A-Roll, Tricycle Gardens, and The Farm Table, which make our Pop-Up Markets so successful. Bon Secours’ Class-A-Roll is a mobile kitchen for nutrition education; Tricycle Gardens provides hands-on demonstrations, tastings, and dinner boxes with recipes using their produce and providing all ingredients needed to take home to make it yourself ($5.50/each); and The Farm Table provides fresh produce delivered to your home or office within 48 hours of ordering.
Church Hill is considered a food desert: an urban neighborhood without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. However, our partners are combating food scarcity by providing the community with a number of opportunities to have access to affordable fresh and local products that would otherwise be unobtainable.

*Pre-Registration RequiredDance Camp
In just a few short weeks, the Robinson Theater will be hosting our first ever Dance Camp! Running the week of August 11-14, this camp will start with a brief devotional, followed by a warm-up session. Participants will then break into groups to learn age-appropriate choreography. Lunchtime will provide hands-on lunch preparation with healthy eating tips. After lunch, participants will engage in games and review what was learned that day. At the end of the week, participants have the opportunity to share what they learned with their parents and the community.
Interested in the Dance Camp? It’s not too late to sign-up! Contact Betsy at (804) 562-9133 or bhart@robinsontheater.org. Dance Camp is free for Church Hill Residents ($20 fee for non-residents) and open to individuals ages 8 and up.
Volunteer Opportunities
Is your family, youth group, or civic group looking for a way to give back? Consider volunteering for one of our monthly movie nights taking place on the second Friday of each month. Perfect for a group of friends or a small group from an organization, volunteers would help set up for the movie night, man the snack bar, welcome guests, and clean up after the event. Approximate volunteer times are from 6pm to 9pm.

FORT (Friends of Robinson Theater)
As the Robinson Theater continues to grow, so does the need for consistent financial support. There are two main ways to support the RTCAC: volunteering your time and giving financially. We are so grateful for your monthly, annual and one-time gifts to assist in the Robinson’s continued outreach to the Church Hill neighborhood. Our goal is to remain a low-cost facility for classes and events in our community. Your contribution helps to keep the Robinson a welcoming, open and activity-filled place for Church Hill residents and families. Please visit our website for secure, online giving.
