Ben Stevenson is the best dressed barber in Church Hill

In Style Weekly’s Word & Image this week, Ned Oliver talks to Ben Stevenson of Ben’s Barber Shop on Marshall Street (& includes Ash Daniel’s stellar photograph of Mr.Stevenson):
I’m old school. Back in the ’60s, men dressed — kept their hair looking nice all the time. But it’s just like anything goes now. That’s just not my shtick. I like a suit and tie all the time. That’s just my style.
I am going to have to read this one for sure! Like I have said, I live around the corner from this and see zero activity there going in and out of the door nor people waiting. And best dressed huh… 1940’s Zoot Suit? 🙂 Got to give him E for Effort though.
I know this stip of buildings have had code violations in the past and is owned by the same person who owns the 401 building that has remained a hollow shell since 2004 and won’t sell it.
I have been going to Ben for some years now and it’s always a pleasure. Good conversation – stories of New York and his large family (daughter married last year), gun violence, drugs etc – the time passes quickly !.
Ben is the quintessential barber – and excellent value is both given and received!
That suit…and that Cheshire grin, would make ‘Ole Nick jealous.
(That’d be the one in red w/horns)
So John, you are saying he isn’t a ethnic only barber? I recall seeing a sign outside a few years back they only did black hair. I would love a local barber… does he do old fashioned barbering including straight razor shaving?
But still, I never see anyone there during the weekends or in the evenings during hours. I think I have only seen 2 people total inside since it reopened. That is why I wonder how he can survive with so little traffic?
I must always catch him on off hours?
WOw…thats an outfit. Not everyman can pull that off like he does
I have went into his shop to have my haircut, and there was someone in the seat getting finished when I walked in and people waiting when I was done. He did a good job and was classy, friendly, informative and had HIS OWN style. Support a good local business.
Ben has cut my husband’s hair since we moved to Church Hill three years ago. I’ve never seen a more precise barber, plus he’s a super-nice guy. And that suit is one of his quieter ones. He color-coordinates right down to his shoes, which are custom-made. Glad that Style Weekly is recognizing a bona-fide Church Hill institution!
Very proud of you dad! Keep doing your thing out there. Love you very much!!!! Xoxo
