This flag is an invitation to communicate
This is 21. Union Market, Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia from the Words in Wait project by Amanda Stephen:
I started the Words In Wait project as a practice in writing and documenting my experiences and thoughts. However, it is also a social experiment of sorts. As someone who creates visual art and writes, I have long been in search of a way to make my writing as visible as my art…to present my words as if they were a painting on the wall.
By leaving my letters in public, I am encouraging people to consume them without thinking, much like one might consume a painting quickly and casually as they walk by it. In this way, I’m hoping to engage people and begin a meaningful dialogue. The times that I write are the times that I feel most connected to that “something greater” that might exist within. Writing is the only way that I know to pray and so this writing has been put on prayer flags in an effort to send these prayers out into the universe.
This is not only the invitation to communicate but it is also a reminder that the person you see – is not only what you see. We never know what kind of burden one carries and it is important to be kind to one another.
There’s a saying that goes, “Your words are the house you live in”. Never underestimate the power of intimate thought, or how it will affect the one who hears it.
