Rash of property crime continues…

We live on the 500 block of 33rd St., and some thieves jumped our fence, broke into the locked garage, and stole a bike. We had just gone on a family biking trip to Pocahontas State Park, and they must have seen us store the bike afterward. It’s a green/silver Scott Sportster.
Just got finished filing a police report with RPD, and we wanted to put everyone on alert. Looks like we are part of series of predations happening in our neighborhood.
Please call police non-emergency (646-5100) if you see this bicycle around the hill.

Figured I’d pass this along – someone broke-in under my house (I don’t store anything down there anymore, so nothing was stolen). Happened [yesterday] somewhere between 9am-3pm. It’s become an annual thing now for the past 4-years.

Please look into this app and tool its about the size of a keychain gym card and lasts for approximately a year, when discreetly attached to an item gives a gps location of 1-5 meters… Also crowdsurfs gps locations of missing items to let other users know they are in the vicinity of stolen property… I bought and used bc I kept losing my passport overseas and it gives me peace of mind. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. It works GREAT!!!!!!
I wish CHPN would do more to advertise this posting about this app we have a serious theft problem and this item is just amazing. Most people have zero idea this tool exist and at 19.00$ a small GPS tracker on your bike or lawnmower or tools is an invaluable insurance policy as well as aiding in apprehending those responsible for this thievery

Not to minimize this rash of thefts, but good locks, well installed on the doors and doorframes are the best way of keeping people out of sheds and storage areas. While a tracking device might allow you to find your stuff (assuming the batteries dont die, the thieves doby find it or the signal is not blocked. Most prebuilt sheds have laughably weak security. Spending some time installing better hardware will give you years of security.
Simply drilling a sizable hole through a door and a matching hole through the wall of the shed, paired with a large chain and a good lock seems to be a relatively good solution
In other news, people who live in an inner-city neighborhood are shocked, I say SHOCKED that their expensive possessions are stolen. I live on Broad Street. We have cat statues in our garden beds. Someone stole a statue. Hell, someone stole the SUNGLASSES off a statue. If someone will steal $2 sunglasses, what chance does your $500 bike have?
Agree with Trish. Newbies on the Hill tend to forget that they’ve moved to the inner City – to the most infamous area in the inner City. The neighborhood doesn’t change simply because you decided to come here. YOU chose to live here – deal with it & stop whining.
Chris Harnish.. why don’t we have greater police presence? It is because we have very few cops coving a very large area that is why. In one of my CERTS meetings a couple years back, one police officer attending to give a speech mentioned having at that time had around 7 officers patrolling the area from Church Hill to the Boulevard! How can you stop crime with such a skeleton crew? I am sure it has changes since. Police are underpaid and it takes a certain kind of person to be one.
Has anyone else also thought to consider that the jail is now occupied by about 300 fewer inmates? I think some of these folks are in alternative treatment programs, which I fully support. However, perhaps some of those folks who have been released into these alternative treatment programs are falling back into their old habits?

When my house was broken in to, a couple of the news stations ran the story. One of my neighbors recognized him. RPC also took DNA from where he cut himself one the window glass. Things are easy to install. You can set up motion sensor. Cameras are made to go both indoors and outdoors. They also have infrared to see in the dark. The 8 cameras give great coverage. You can even set up alerts to you smartphone and remotely view the property.
