All I see are JOBS for the East End! Maybe we should circulate a petition of support for this project? It might be enough to tip it in Richmond’s favor if there’s a groundswell of local support.
Please please please let’s not get in our own way here. This could be so great for our area & would be a huge get in a market that is really taking off right now!
Governments use cash incentives and tax breaks all the time to incentivize businesses to locate within their borders. I wonder whether NEIGHBORS have ever done such a thing on a large scale enough scale to be meaningful.
Clearly we are competing with another locality here. It would be interesting to crowdsource a cash incentive to this business to locate in the East End. I would certainly donate. I think the enthusiasm it would show would stand out above any actual sums raised and maybe be enough for Stone Brewery to pick Richmond’s East End.
Matt, hit me up if crowdsource gets off the ground. I’m good for a few pennies in the tip jar.
I cannot attend the meeting (will be working). I would also be willing to make a financial contribution and/or offer support from the neighborhood. I would love to see this happen in the East End!
Without knowing the particulars, I would assume this will be awesome for the area! Jobs, visitors from outside the area that would patronize other businesses, tax dollars, etc
I’d love to see that, but I hope they build up since Gillies Creek can flood that area.
Sounds like a plan to develop the Fulton Gas Works site. If the historic environmental contamination can be dealt with that would be a super reuse of the property. FYI – the brewery’s website indicates that the City has already had to describe whatever incentives are on offer for the company to settle here.
Can’t attend as well, but let’s all look at the net positives on this before we shoot ourselves in the foot, please.
kfo, as you can see in the map, above, this is due east of the FGW site.
Besides, the ground under Fulton Gas works is contaminated with arsenic. That probably wouldn’t make good beer.
Let’s get this done. No roadblocks please.
Wow, I’m surprised this idea has seen no opposition. Hope this idea comes through, bringing jobs and revenue to the City!
Will the capital bike trail pass close to this? Could be an excellent pit stop at the end of a ride. This is a BIG opportunity for the area….the amount of out of town visitors this could bring to the area is reason enough. Let’s hope Richmond can seal the deal on this one.
Lewis and 37th Streets are to be abandoned? Aren’t they already? Although on the parcel map, Lewis is there but 37th isn’t. I used to be able to see 37th Street years ago but it’s been covered by grass. Anyway, I hope this gets built and Richmond becomes a beer capital.
I’m all for some strategic development, but I have some concerns (and am alone by the looks of it). First, this cuts off Rockett’s residential and commercial growth from moving further towards Fulton. Second, don’t breweries create pollution? It just surprises me that you don’t want anything to be built taller than 100 feet unless it’s industrial. That’s what this special use permit calls for, right? So, if I’m understanding this right, your approval is based upon the potential for jobs – or is it based upon your love of beer? This is not a microbrewery they are proposing. It’s an industrial facility that will impact the watershed and your air quality. Just something to keep in mind. Oh, and Ben, do people really want to drink beer after a long ride? I dunno man.
I’m in for a drink or three after riding!!
With brewery on the horizon, buzz builds in Fulton

Richmond neighbors speak out on possible mega brewery

Look at brewery’s like Devils Backbone, Wild Wolf and Blue Mountain in Nelson county – people flock to those establishments after a day of hiking or mountain biking to drink, eat and socialize. Legend gets a good crowd from the SoJ’s trails.
#21, Legend Brewery doesn’t seem to get air quality complaints. Rocketts is all about the riverfront as a primary draw for their sales. Industrial scrubbers are highly advanced and can be put in place so that air quality/smell is not affected, Denmark uses them for trash incinerators in urban areas. California has the strictest environmental regulations in the nation, I’m sure the brewery will adhere to the standards it follows for building and regulatory compliance. The powers that be can make sure that this would be a must for its construction if Richmond is chosen. I have lived with the smells of various flavorings added to tobacco when it was processed in the Bottom, somehow I survived. Contact regulators from the state’s DEQ to get info on air quality permits and what they allow. I’m for the project and the revenue it will bring to the city, unless you’d rather have Walmart.
You certainly can drink beer after a long ride, hike, or walk. The Germans do it all the time, or chose a Radler (biker) which is beer mixed with a lemon-lime soda served in very large glasses/mugs. Even on mountaintops you’ll find a cafe/pub where folks can enjoy food and beverages. I’ve lived in Germany, Denmark, and California so I’m familiar with the cultures and lifestyles.
so the brewery, whether in fulton or manchester, will be leasing the space? i’m all for it, but RRHA leasing to a brewery is a little strange to me.
Lots of big time breweries are in the middle of a city, and pollution is no problem. Yes, this is going to be a HUGE brewery. It’s output will be at least 10X of all the breweries in town combined. However, this will not look like a power plant or oil refinery on the river. Since it will be a new building with store front space (retail and bistro I think), it will look really nice.
Check out their California brewery

Thanks ray! That definitely makes it more appealing. I was picturing something like the one next to Busch Gardens. If it looks like this, awesome!
However, you guys knock yourself out drinking after biking. Just drink plenty of water. I’ll be taking a shower after mine.
no one else thinks its strange that rrha is leasing to a brewery? not trying to be the debbie downer here, but i wonder if this is their first rodeo as it relates to businesses
