Victim Identified in North 22nd Street Shooting
The Richmond Police Department has identified the man who fatally shot himself yesterday evening during an encounter with officers in the city’s east end as Kevin L. Jones, 35, of Richmond. (No block address available at this time.)
At approximately 7:27 p.m. last night Jones was spotted driving a vehicle that matched the description of one that was involved in a shooting incident in the Fairfield Court housing complex a few minutes earlier. After a short pursuit, Jones abandoned the vehicle near the intersection of N. 22nd and Y streets and attempted to flee on foot. When confronted by officers, he shot himself once in the head.
Jones was transported to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m.
The medical examiner will determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Because the self-inflicted shooting was fatal and took place in the presence of several officers, the Department is conducting a full investigation into the case, which is the protocol. Detectives have been identifying and speaking to eyewitnesses, collecting and analyzing forensic evidence, and consulting with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The officers who responded have been questioned about what they saw and heard.
“I can assure you that this is the same type of investigation we would conduct into any incident of this type,” Richmond Police Chief Ray J. Tarasovic said. “We have in the past and we will in the future.”
The initial shooting call occurred at the intersection of 23rd Street and Fairfield Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing multiple shots fired at them from a passing vehicle. Detectives are seeking more information about that incident.
Anyone with any information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip.
