Bicycle and running trails in the East End (UPDATED)
Inspired by a post on reddit/r/rva and glimpses of trails I’d seen earlier this year down by Gillies Creek, I went out looking for running/mountain bike trails in the area.
After some poking around, I discovered a great, fast linear trail along Gillies Creek, with a nice turn-around loop at the east end (#1). This feels like the first half of the hypothetical East End Greenway… There’s a spur off to Chimborazo Park (#2), and I was able to stay off-road all the way up to 31st Street on the way back out.
Continuing across Jennie Scher, there is more trail on the other side of the tracks (#3). There is an option to the right that climbs up to Accomac and Kemp in Montrose Heights. There’s another short trail (not on the map) at the other end of that block of Accomac that drops down between Beth Torah Cemetery and Sir Moses Montefiore Cemetery on Jennie Scher. If you stick to the left after crossing Jennie Scher, there is more technical ride with some good climbing and a lot of up and down. Kind of feels like more rough version of some of the Forest Hills trails.

There is another more winding set of trails west of Williamsburg Avenue (#4), where the brewery is proposed. While some of these trails feel abandoned, there’s also a nice run towards Nicholson Street that someone has obviously put some effort into. It would be great to see some kind of trail connection maintained through this property, especially when the Virginia Capital Trail makes it to Richmond.
Anybody know of any other trails in the area?

Awesome John, I get my question answered with personal service!
I know various neighbors have made efforts to cut trails through lower chimborazo and would be willing to help facilitate this as best I can. Its alot of work to keep that kudzu out of the way
@ Chimbo, I’d help with that.
I will also help – manual labor and facilitation. It’s a good time of the year to take on this project.
You can also continue across the railroad tracks at Jennie Scher (you need to follow the north side of the tracks for about 50 feet before you see this trail) and take newly cut trails along the creek or up to Fulton Hill.
There are trails from Jennie Scher to Montrose Heights. I see MTBers often in Montrose Heights so they must be riding somewhere.
@errybody – I went out today and found the next section of trails, & they’re nice. More hills and ups&downs than the first bit.
I updated the map/post above with the new section.
It’s obvious that someone has put work into that eastern section. I’d be glad to help out on any trail days.
I rode these trails this past weekend and they are fun. I would love to do a little bit of work on them. Not much, as part of the charm is how rough they are, but some trash collection would be a good start. Anyone interested?
@Kathleen Sanders, count me in (but after the Bike Race–I’m swamped til then)
I’d be up for this.
Awesome! I agree after the race. Early-mid October? I have both of your email addresses. Anyone else interested?
Yes!, I’m glad this was revived. The trails through Chimborazo are fantastic and right next to my home. I am going out after work today to try to find the trails across Jennie Scher. There are a few trails that have been overgrown closer to Chimborazo that could use some work too.
My email is rmaxwell804@gmail.com if you would like to get in contact to get organized.
LETS DO IT
I offer manual labor and time at yalls earliest convenience
Dewbius – Drop me an email at sleekitdogs@aol.com. Trail work is planned for this Saturday (10/10) from 9-12.
Yes the property listed at 31st and grace is private property. Please stay off of it. Thank you in advance. Matt Elmes
Thanks for the clarification, had always assumed that was CSX property.
