Group raising funds to restore sign in honor of Tyler Potterfield
A message today from Ashley Peace:
Dear Friends of Tyler,
Please help us raise funds to restore the Chuck’s Locksmith sign in honor of T. Tyler Potterfield.
Before his sudden passing, Tyler was working to restore this historic sign on Nine Mile Road to revitalize the Church Hill neighborhood in the City’s East End. One side of the sign will be preserved in its original condition. The other side will feature a custom design by Marshall Higgins of interlocking irises to symbolize Tyler’s hope, courage, and wisdom as one of the leading champions for preserving and revitalizing Richmond’s historic neighborhoods.
This image is featured on a commemorative t-shirt that may be purchased by clicking the link below. All funds raised will go directly to the sign restoration project.
Please share this link with friends, family, colleagues and other supporters. Don’t forget to post the link on Facebook and Twitter! The goal is to sell 150 shirts in the next 4 weeks.
Many thanks go to Caroline Warner and members of Tyler’s Salon group for making this happen! Thank you also to those who have already purchased a commemorative shirt!

Just curious… it looks to be an old ESSO sign, was it?
Given the location, I would not be surprised if that building used to be a gas station.
PURE also used the round signs http://www.waymarking.com/gallery/image.aspx?f=1&guid=d2a027e3-bdfc-4e77-b844-e1f34b59c813
Lovely idea. I’m in 🙂
I think you are right John. I saw this same picture of a station in Delaware with the same pole. You can see the blue color coming through the sign, same for Esso but Esso seems to have been hung under a pole are rather than on top of one.
So, are they painting it back to the original Pure Gas sign on one side or one of many subsequent later tenants?

My assumption that it is being restored as the Chuck’s Locksmith sign, as that is how it keeps being referred to and that is how has a specific connection to the neighborhood.
What is the amount that needs to be raised?
They are trying to raise $2,300 in total, of which folks have already pledged $520.

Happy to support this project that honors Tyler and enhances the Nine Mile Road Corridor.
Bon Secours owns that property now. Maybe they would pitch in? That shop was robbed several years ago and the owner shot the robber. The saying came about, “Don’t f*ck with Chuck” after that.
Queen of Church Hill… maybe that is what they need to put on the sign instead 🙂
click on the links and read the info before you ask questions #petpeeve
morgan… I use to design websites years ago and the first rule of thumb in doing so was that people do not like to “read” lengthy descriptions online. Their attention span does not allow it. That said, it is easier to ask a quick question than click on links especially any that may take you away from the site you are on.
I’m guessing Morgan was referring to me. From the link, I saw that Bon Secours donated the sign that will cost $2300 to fix. I was referring to money to fix the sign. Maybe I wasn’t clear in my question.
Less than a $1,000 to go!

Am I imagining things or was this building demolished?
Yep, a few buildings were razed /2014/01/18/richmonds-smallest-house-facing-demolition_31416/
The fundraiser was $790 short. Are they going forward with the sign restoration?
I am surprised the sign is still there since I am sure whoever rebuilds there will not want it? A shame that the project ran short. Also hate that the little house is also gone and couldn’t have been moved versus the cost to demolition.
