A presentation on the Stone Brewing project
11/06/2014 7:01 AM by John M
Ann from Union Hill forwarded to us a copy of a presentation on the Stone Brewing project that Jane Ferrara (Deputy Director of Economic/Community Development) was scheduled to make at last week’s 7th District Meeting. Ann says that “Ms.Ferrara gave a talk […] because the meeting space wasn’t set up for this presentation. Good talk as is this – with lots of information.”

There are miles of mountain biking trails running all through the area they are developing. I hope the put some thought into maintaining some of the trails around the brewery which connect to the river.
I had the same thought. Minimally, it’d be nice to have a bicycle-friendly connector route from the Gillies Creek path to the Capital Trail

Why are they asking the city to develop the site and build the use dings for them? Don’t businesses usually build their own facilities? What good will it all be to Richmond if these people decide to walk away in five years? I was all on board until I saw that the brewery wasn’t really paying it’s own way. In Singapore, where I lived the past few years, that city gave great “incentives” like this to companies to set up shop. As soon as the incentives expired, company after company up and moved to India chasing lower costs, even companies like this one that would need to build new, expensive facilities wherever they went. Companies that come for handouts aren’t in it for the long haul.
I will say that breweries, Stone especially, are known for their support of cyclists (for example, they make a cycling jersey). Hopefully this will be brought up in development meetings and could be a cool way of connecting Stone to local cyclists, both mountain and road. The location has great access to route 5 which is a popular cycling road and apparently these mtn bike trails as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Stone parking lot became a meeting place for cyclists to leave for rides and return for a cold one. I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of RVA cyclists rocking Stone jerseys in no time.
We are very happy to be working with Stone and the city to make this facility a great one for the whole community. Greater Fulton is full of creative and dynamic people who are involved in the community’s future while honoring its past. We will ensure connections to the river. If you haven’t seen it already, check out the video that was made of the Welcome Stone Brewing event held on the site in October. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mGFDfuXcYw&feature=youtu.be
#5 – good points. I see a Stone is for Bike Lovers campaign starting. Richmond has one of the most unique biking trail systems in America and Stone is going to sit right in the middle of it.

Please read the RTD article this Sun morning on the less than transparent selection of the developer of the $18 million taxpayer-funded project. Developer selected somehow is exactly the same, as Redskins park project ….. hummm?
