Attempted B&E on Marshall Street
12/02/2014 7:42 AM by John M
The Church Hill Neighborhood Watch has details on an attempted B&E on Marshall Street last night:
At approximately 7:30 an individual witnessed an attempted B&E on the 3000 block of E. Marshall. 911 was called immediately as the suspect was not recognized by the neighbor as an occupant of the house. A tall male suspect with light skin (most likely Caucasian), dark hoodie and hunched posture entered a yard through the rock alleyway along the fence line. […]
I’ve seen the exact three individuals lurking around 30th street and the back alley on Sunday around 4:30pm. Specially the “skater kid” with the hoodie, hunched posture and the skinny jeans can’t be missed. I was surprised that the dog’s did not alarm when these three passed by, that was very unusual. They later disappeared towards the basketball courts.
Can we please have a serious conversation about why these kids are still out on the street?
Has a (civil) conversation with the kids, if they are known, been attempted?
I would also like to clarify that a conversation with these alleged kids by someone they trust would be ideal.
Agree with Michael Jones. We all know who they are. We even know where they live. What is it going to take to get them off the street? I’m willing to help in any way because I don’t feel safe in front of my own home.
@briejc they’ve held people up with guns… Are you going to volunteer to have that civil discussion?
They are young, yes, but they are behaving in a violent manner that doesn’t necessarily welcome civil discussion. Brie, I understand where you’re coming from, but I think at this point, it’s more a need for the police to step in and actually DO something about these guys rather than someone from the neighborhood trying to have a discussion with them. This isn’t little kid stuff they’re doing – they are armed and willing to use that force.
I did not realize that there was a gun involved. I agree that guns can change any given situation. I was speaking directly to the blurb above, which does not mention a gun or any other kind of weapon as well as the on going concern (which I definitely agree is justified) of recent incidents of this type. I guess I wanted to facilitate a conversation about preventing it in the future. I do not think any level of violence is justified but simply putting someone in detention or jail does not eliminate acts of violence or address the larger issue/problem.
Haven’t these kids been identified in multiple crimes in the past few months, what is taking so long to do something about it?
This is partially taking the shine off of my interest in a revival of the old boy’s gangs of Church Hill and Union Hill.

As for the white kid, he was entering his own backyard after taking a bag of trash out. He entered into his own house. I have no idea why the caller did not recognize him, as he is his neighbor and should know that this was where the boy lived.
I’m really curious to how this whole thing is going to resolve… I hope the RPD catches them before they hurt someone or someone hurts them.
They need to follow these punks whenever they leave their houses…..
the neighbor probably called the police because they recognized him #whitecriminalproblems
Anon, you have no idea what you’re talking about. I was the caller–I know the kid. I saw him. I called the police. My neighbor and I witnessed the whole thing–saw the look out kid, saw them texting..leaving in the car…he was not taking out the trash. I couldn’t even see his alley from my alley. He did not enter his own house I know exactly where he lives.
Hey folks,
A slew of pointed comments came through during the dinner hour, which I’m not comfortable hosting.
This is one of those events which seems to be beyond the capacity for comments here to be constructive, and where they may instead be harmful.
I’m not sure what the solution is here, but I don’t want CHPN to be an agent of division.
Thanks,
John
I respect your position, John. Thanks for everything you do!
Rather than get John in hot water for having dicey material on his blog, folks may want to put any of the more controversial stuff on the RVA reddit at:
http://www.reddit.com/r/rva/
It tends to be more loosely moderated. However, posting personal details about the suspected creeps would still need to be avoided. Keep sending those to RPD. However if you feel like having a less neighborly rant, the reddit is probably the place for that.
From Lt.Sayles:
Good morning,
On the evening of Dec 1st police received a call to respond to the 3000 block of East Marshall Street. The caller stated that they heard a breaking or crashing sound that may have been glass. The caller saw a male of unknown race and age wearing a hoodie walking in the area, possibly the alley or yard. Officers responded and canvassed the area. The suspicious male was not located. At this time there has been no report of a burglary or destruction of property that was reported to the police. Anyone with information about a potential burglary in this area is asked to contact crime stoppers at 780-1000.
So was it a b.e. or not
