Sign up here to help at East End Cemetery as part of MLK Day 2015:

This is part of ongoing effort to clean up vegetation in the East End Cemetery. Located in eastern Henrico, the cemetery is the final resting place for several notable Richmond area African-Americans such as Rosa Bowser and Virginia Randolph. The cemetery has been abandoned for years and is overgrown with brush and ivy and has been used as an illegal dumping area. Due to the delicate nature of the gravestones, heavy equipment cannot be brought in to assist with the clearing and clean up needed to preserve this part of our region’s history. Volunteers are needed to clear weeds and overgrown ivy, trim branches, bushwhack and pick up trash.

Due to the nature of this work, volunteers should come dressed in heavy shoes or boots, and protective clothing such as long pants and long shirts. Please note that there are no restrooms on site, but are available at local businesses down the street. Volunteers should bring plenty of water to drink and their own tools, gloves and rakes, if possible. Help bring dignity and honor back to this historic site!
