Happy New Year’s, folks

The East End has the reputation for getting kind of shooty on New Year’s Eve. Not the intentionally violent kind, but the “going out and shooting what you’ve got” kind.
Old timers tell of finding bullets lodged in their roofs, and last year a falling bullet hit a car on Chimborazo Boulevard.
The police are well aware of the situation, and ask that folks call in any shooting that they might hear.
Be safe, and please don’t shoot my truck.
TAGGED: New Year's Eve
Okay, I clicked the link that took me to last year. A bunch of comments were made that this year, folks would call 911 if they heard gunfire. Let’s see if we actually do that. Happy New Year, John and everyone else, and John – thanks again for all you do!
Screw the bullets, what Shockoe Bottom club is blaring shitty rappers at such a high decibel I can hear them clearly through my bedroom window FIVE BLOCKS AWAY?
I can hear all the words of “yo digiddy” clear as day from Marshall and Chimbo. F’ing rediculous.
Yea and I agree shitty rappers- they shoulda just played some tupac or jay z LP’s…..
I don’t think I’ll be able to hear gun shots over this loud Crap music
The music is outrageously loud. Also, tons of gun fire. People are stupid.
I don’t think that’s Shockoe Bottom, it’s Brown’s Island folks.
I called the police non-emergency number, the operator seemed confused as to why I was calling, especially as I couldn’t give an exact intersection (not the easiest thing to gauge based off sound). Seemed like she didn’t see last year’s post.
In other news, John, are we still down for a historic “4” for 2014?

@PTG – Indeed. There were only 4 homicides in the East End in 2014. This is fewer than half of the previous contemporary low, and likely holds going back to at least the early 1960s.

Ditto on annoyance at repetitive bass beat heard for hours while trying to enjoy a quiet evening indoors at 28th and Marshall, forget trying to sleep until the Browns Island party was over – I sympathize with the Carytown folk who had to put up with this for years.
Gunfire was WAY down last night from previous years!
As to loud music coming from Brown’s Island, can you imagine what the decible level would be for a Schockho Ball Park?
I did notice that the shitty rapper volume went WAY down around 12:05 a.m., leading me to believe that I was far from the only one that complained about the noise to the RVAPD last night.
And maybe this sounds weird but I can sleep through gunfire pops much better than I can through shitty rapping.
Happy 2015 to all my fellow Hillians. HILL YEAH!
(and happy 2015 to the RVAPD dispatchers who undoubtedly had to listen to a LOT of bitching last night.)
At 28th & Broad, I didn’t hear any gunfire, but the countdown & obnoxious noise from Brown’s Island drowned out most all other sounds. And that’s from 20+ blocks away & 8+ blocks north.
Good point, Jean, about potential noise level from a stadium that would be HALF the distance.
Moved to N. 31st St. about a month ago. I mapped it and Brown’s Island is about 3 miles away. I was awakened from a sound sleep by the fireworks last night. I jumped out of bed feeling very disoriented lol Truthfully, it sounded more like cannon fire, like I was in the middle of a reenactment or something. No gunfire was heard.
Rita
Yea gunfire was way less this year!
So was this really browns island- the music? If so you could probably hear it 5-7 miles away, considering I could hear it clear as day from about 1.5-2 miles!!
