Going back to at least 1980, Richmond has only had seven months without any homicides: three in 2008, one in 2009, two in 2010, and then January, 2015. January ends a streak of 54 straight months with at least one killing. Before 2008 it had been at least 28 years since the city saw a month this quiet.

For some historical perspective: 1994 saw 2 months with over 20 killings, and only one month in the single digits. The violence peaked in August 1994 when 25 killings left someone dead almost every day of that month. There were more murders that year than in 2007, 2008, 2009, and the 1st half of 2010 combined. It was rough, to say the least.

Last year, Richmond had 3 homicides in January (2 of which remain unsolved).
