Things that go boom in the morning?
02/07/2015 1:56 PM by John M
From Melissa:
Curious to know if anyone else heard those loud booms this (Sat.) morning around 10/10:30? Two sets of two loud booming noises could clearly be heard in the East Broad/Chimbo area. Sounded almost like canon fire.
TAGGED: question
yes I heard it!! So strange! I heard it from 31st and Marshall.
I heard them, and figured it was a naval battle reenactment happening on the James, or that the Civil War Center down at Tredegar got a cannon and was trying it out.
Good thoughts @Lora. Thanks.
Considering the location might it have been something to do with clearing the site for Stone brewery? They’re taking down trees and stuff….
^^agree with crd.
Go take a look, it’s pretty crazy how much they got cleared in such a short amount of time.
Trains?
I heard them yes. BOOM BOOM…BOOM BOOM. I was on Main Street around VCU at to me it sounded like the sounds came from the south.
It could be the Mystery Booms, see link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AucNknsauBE
Didn’t we have a similar situation a few years ago that turned out to be sewer gas exploding and raising manhole covers up Main St? DPU had comment that time.
The booms around colonial heights were found to be done guy buying explosive targets and shooting at them
*some
I heard two sets of boom too but they were between 3:30-4:00 this morning so doubt it was from construction..
I heard some booms about 3:29AM last night…
More booms? Wow this is beginning to get spooky. Has anything been reported in any of the other media?
@Eric, I heard the same cannon fire booms at the exact same time this AM. Sounded like they came from upper Shockoe Valley.
Isn’t it crazy! It could have been trains but I am sure someone would have chimed in on that? I know now from that last concert where the music at Brown’s Island sounded like it was 2 blocks away rather than 2 miles. It acts like an amphitheater so the noise could have come from Shockoe? It wasn’t the first time within a month we have heard these noises. No shaking that I could tell but just noise. I would like to know what it is. Has anything been on the news or noted by the police?
Looking about I have come up with three different scenarios but nothing recently has been posted by the news media about the more recent booms.
Back last April there were some heard in several counties coming from the National Guard canon fire exercises and the atmosphere was right to carry the sounds. They practice 24-hours a day. Another was about people using Exploding Targets and the third is seismic booms.
There has been a LOT of recent seismic activity lately including the west coast. There has been a lot of dormant volcanos starting to show some rumbling too (even in California) with a few in other countries now spewing lava and ash. When there is stress on one side eventually the other side of the plate will have some release rumblings. Just one possibility.
Matt and Eric: I also heard the boom a little after 3:00am this morning. I was first woken up by, what sounded like, a gun shot. As I tried to go back to sleep, I heard a resonating boom. Very interesting!
People, this is the city, we live really close to Mosby, Creighton and fairfield courts. People often use guns, including shotguns which make really loud booms. I’ve gotten used to it just like the loud train….
Eric, you might want to add shotgun discharge to your list-
I really don’t think a shotgun is the weapon of choice in those places
The boom was too low frequency (bass) to be shotgun. And from where I live Craighton Court would be over 20-blocks away. I doubt a gun would make enough noise to travel that far?
And yes shotguns are used quite commonly for robberies, especially home invasions. Anyone over 18 can buy them at even walmart.
Illegal handguns are EXPENSIVE.
Creighton is only 15-16 blocks from Libby hill and chimborazo
Mosby is only about 10 blocks from Libby Hill.
When it is quiet out with little wind and the atmosphere is right, gunshots can be heard from far away
Could have been a sonic boom, a lot of planes fly in pairs…. so two booms would make since
Perhaps it was the sound of fireworks from the Shockoe Stadium coming back to us from the future through a rift in the space/time continuum?
Better yet, maybe Knitorious M.E.G. and her gang of commando ninja knitters was dropping another love bomb or two from on high.
A couple of years ago, there was a stretch of time where we were hearing thunderous booms in Union Hill at night – on a fairly regular basis. Did NOT sound like a gun of any size shy of a cannon. I kept expecting to read about it in the paper but never ever found out what the booms were.
This weekend (think it was Sunday morning), my 3 year old asked what the booms in the night were. I didn’t hear them personally. She added that maybe they were fireworks… sounds like she was describing something similar to what y’all heard.
Weird.
What’s that noise? Could be a cryoseism. If you’ve heard a loud boom, cracking sound, or bump in the night recently, it may be what’s called a cryoseism (aka frost quake). Scientists say they occur when water builds up in soil and expands. When the pressure gets too great, the rock and soil collapse, creating the noise. Sometimes it can be startling.
My previous post was a cut and paste from an article and audio story at http://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/story/23659/20140101/what-s-that-noise-could-be-a-cryoseism
Has there ever been any answers on this one yet?
Bringing this back to the top because just a few minutes ago there was a post that a 2.1 quake hit near the NC border and the night before people heard what sounded to them like thunder coming from the ground (booms). Also today in CT and NY they had small quakes. We are in the middle of these two events so… we are still up for a possible event ourselves due to plate stress from the opposite side of the continent.. Be prepared, be safe.
Not well reported but there was a small 2.5 quake NNE of Goochland today between Oilville and Sandy Hook.
