Couple robbed on 26th Street
03/08/2015 7:31 AM by John M
From Lt.Sayles:
ROBBERY (INDIVIDUAL)- 600 BLOCK N 26TH STREET- 03-07-2015; 2030HOURS-
Two adult victims had just exited their car when they were approached by three (3) unknown black males. One of the suspects produced a handgun and stated “Kick that shit” at which point victim 1tossed his wallet on the ground and his wife did the same with her purse. The victims both ran on foot westbound towards N 25th street where they came in contact with an officer and flagged him down. Items taken during the robbery consisted of both couple’s credit cards, U.S currency and identification cards. No injuries.
Damn, at 2030?! Cmon RPD you can’t be letting us down!
Yes, Bee let’s blame RPD because they can’t be everywhere all of the time.
1. That’s WAY too close to my house.
2. If someone pulled a gun on me and said “kick that shit” I’d be a dead man because I would have no idea what they were telling me to do. I have never heard the phrase “kick that shit” in my life.
What the heck – how could anyone blame this on RPD??? The robbers aren’t at fault because…? I know – let’s blame it on the victims! Seriously y’all, these crooks are scumbags and Church Hill needs to concentrate on ridding this area of scumbags. That’s going to take all of us helping RPD by calling when we see stuff that just doesn’t look right.
Gee…yet another example of why the RPD foot patrol area needs to be expanded or moved entirely to the north of Broad area. I think highly of the RPD but I still question the reasoning behind having a stronger presence in the south of Broad area when it’s clear the majority of crime happens north of Broad.
@10, I live ON Broad, albeit on the south side of the street, and I have not seen any foot patrols yet. I’m wondering if anyone else has seen them?
@ Bee & likewise
Actual solutions:
1.) Increased personal and neighborhood “situational awareness” and etc. Bad guys hate more eyes. Sheep have their eyes on the sides of their heads because they are prey. Ours face front for a good reason.
2.) Entertain “carrying” *&* a CCW Permit. Of course, I know the onslaught of ugly comments this idea will garner.
3.) SUPPORT your local police with info and action. Yes, I know that Policemen/women are not in favor these days. They’ll still lay down their life for you & yours however.
4.) Listen to *& heed* the instincts you were born with. We have blocked, dumbed down and otherwise wasted this incredible tool for survival and awareness (w/Ipods, cell phones ad infinitum). That “little feeling”, hairs up on your neck & etc. is TALKING TO YOU…LISTEN!
Ah…ok. Nuff said.
Stuff can be replaced but man that pisses me off. I found what I thought was a handgun near a bus stop last year. I called and waited for police to arrive. I hung around in case I needed to answer questions. Turns out it was a pellet gun not a real gun. The officer says a lot of criminals use them for robberies as they’re easy to get and look like the real deal. Of course, you take the chance if it’s real or not.
There are things in every post I could agree/disagree with, funny and serious.
In the two years Ive lived here, Ive seen two police officers on bikes only once. Even with the precinct right on 25th they can’t be everywhere all the time. You would think that crime would be next to zero just because of the branch being here.
It would be nice to have a neighborhood watch, but what kind of protection would the volunteers cary?
We just have to be aware no matter where we are. Unfortunately you can’t always let your guard down. That’s just a fact.
BAF…you did make me laugh with your “kick that shit” comment. Im with you on that. Of course I would’ve been shot because I’m not going to hand over anything just because of a few words.
Let’s just keep positive and do what we can.
Pss…how’s the street cleaning going? Are some of the businesses pitching in?

I personally like the idea (and I’ve floated it with others) of having a digital neighborhood watch – I.e. With webcams/dropcams from around the neighborhood, all voluntarily shared on a single website. That way there could theoretically always be someone watching, who could call the police in real time. It’s a bit of an undertaking because of the number of cameras involved, but the real obstacle are (legitimate) privacy conc

With webcams/dropcams from around the neighborhood, all voluntarily shared on a single website. That way there could theoretically always be someone watching, who could call the police in real time. It’s a bit of an undertaking because of the number of cameras involved, but the real obstacle are (very legitimate) privacy concerns. Hope this thread isn’t dead/someone responds…
Lee,
It does sound very interesting. I believe New Orleans had one set up awhile back in coordination with their local law enforcement:

A quick Google of Digital Neighborhood Watch reveals some interesting reads:

The issues that come to mind foremost in an endeavor like this are cost, security and privacy. Who will purchase cameras – and allow them to feed into a networked repository? Will that network and repository be secure? Who will have access and responsibility to review footage?
There are answers for these issues that for me would work. However, I’m curious about our community accepting something along these lines. My guess is that overall the community would register a luke-warm reception to such an idea at best. So maybe a private ad-hoc setup might be best?
Mike,
I was thinking of simply making it all publicly accessible/streaming them online. Doesn’t solve all privacy concerns/may raise new ones, but at least it’s theoretically transparent. The thought was to reach out to folks in the neighborhood who already have IP cams/dropcam type setups and figure out how to stream those to a single website.
There is already a website that trawls and displays IP cams with open/unsecured feeds and/or cameras where the owner has left the camera set to the default settings, so it can’t be that difficult to setup where people voluntarily share. Was thinking it could all be voluntary/private
the ad hoc idea gives me the creeps as well
@ edg – obviously, I’m okay with it, but what specifically concerns you? Being taped in general? The potential for it to be abused somehow? I think there may be a slight age/generational gap here (no presumptions about your age, mind you), based on conversations I’ve had with other people, but I could be wrong.
