New cobbles for 23rd Street hill
04/17/2015 3:59 PM by John M
From Trish on Grace Street:
The 23rd Street hill between Franklin Street and Grace Street is being re-cobbled in preparation for the Richmond 2015 UCI Bike Race.
I’d heard that the blacktop was for traction for cars.
My truck is happy for the cobble stones to be back!!
John M is correct, i called the city at the time. The blacktop was for traction. I am THRILLED they are doing this, YAY!
John is right. When it rains cars cannot get up the hill with the cobblestones, and it is dangerous when you go down because you cannot get traction. Once the cobblestones are back please avoid that street.
So the street will be dangerous, but more aesthetically pleasing, and…this seems to be…good…news? (Not taking a stance, but how long until they repave it because people complain…?)
Bill, you mean avoid when wet… after rains and snow/ice…
@7 well hopefully they will put them back in a way that makes it easier to traverse. Obviously they want it to work, the city is hosting the Worlds!
Awesome!
The beauty of living in a proper city with a grid of streets is that you have multiple ways to get around — cars don’t need to go down that hill if it’s dangerous. YAY!
And maybe the city could post a sign at both the top and bottom saying “Caution — slippery when wet”
This is going to be a GRUELING point for those cyclists. Can’t wait!
Fabulous!!!
Typical… City rushed to pave the cobblestones without asking/coordinating with community. Only did 3/4 paving so it looked terrible. Three years later removing what they did and redoing the cobbles, (which about 5X more expensive then a regular road work). Net result: loss/waste of time, money, and disregard the feelings of the community. Love you RVA, you are consistent ! Can’t wait for next round of short-term, quick-fix, goof-ups, (without coordination with community), as they rush headlong towards the Cycling Championship in Sep.
Why do you suppose they tore this street up and then just disappeared?
Will they wait until September to finish this job? Does anyone else miss using this street?
