Church Hill scores high on AARP’s Livability Index
The AARP’s Livability Index rates communities on a variety of facets including housing, environment, engagement, and opportunity (akin to the Walk Score, but different).
The index covers 200,000 communities around the country, and includes county- and state-level data as well. As you might imagine, the city’s older, more dense neighborhoods score better than the surrounding county suburbs. Across Virginia, the old neighborhoods of Richmond, in fact, are second only to neighborhoods in Arlington on the Livability Index.
From the traffic circle on 25th Street, the Livability Index gives the area a score of 60. The area score high on access to markets and parks, density, affordable housing, civic engagement, social engagement, and age diversity, but looses points on access to jobs via transit, the number of vacant houses, and the crime rate. The Index somehow missed the fact that the East End Library is only blocks away.

Good to know that we’ll still be happy about living here when we’re older!
The score may have actually been higher. The EPA tool they use to determine the access to public transportation has no data for Richmond. It shows 0 buses per hour for every location I found in Richmond. If the data for GRTC was added, the score would probably be higher.
