Let’s make a visitor’s guide to the area

With an eye towards the bicycle races coming up in September, I’ve put together a rough draft of A Visitor’s Guide to Church Hill, a map with info on area attractions, services, and restaurants.
Check it out and help make this better. Got any feedback? What’s missing?

Richmond Rides Bicycle Tours!
Buzzy’s and Hill Cafe are showing up way north of Broad, at least in the view I got – If Buzzy’s is #10, then it’s over on Venable Street?
You might also want to consider including: Ethel Bailey Furman Park, Bill Robinson Park, Gillies Creek Park, RPD First Precinct, the fire station, Richmond Community Hospital, The Robinson Theater, and Davinci’s pizza.
I forgot Anthony’s on The Hill!
@Catherine – Good catch, I just added a TOURS listing.
Although just off the hill, maybe add the church hill tunnel entrance…also highlighting the black and white historical signs could be handy
IF YOU’RE SEEING AN EFFED UP MAP…
Can you tell me what you are using to visit the page (type of device & which browser)?
also note: add Aziza’s
I’m using Chrome on Win7, the map works great, but the information window is over half the map. I’m not sure if there’s anything east of Urban Set Bride, west of Oakwood Cem, or north of Chimbo Mart. But if there is, it’s covered up. Also I don’t understand what the black line at the top is for. It looks like it’s pointing to 18th and Venable, but there’s nothing there so idk.
What about the markets, like the Blue Wheeler? Also maybe the LFLs, since we have so many now spread all over our area? The post office? The fire house, if you are going to list the 1st precinct?
Great idea! I use Chrome on an Android device and the numerical markers are all off of the map, in the area of the text above.
Everything looks fine on Safari for iPhone except proper pie is way up on N 32nd. I also second the church hill tunnel west entrance. I always love to take guests there.
Three comments:
What a terrific idea – but I didn’t understand if it was an app for a phone;
This is Church Hill so you may want to add some church’s; and,
Something like this is easily converted to a muli-lingual application and for the bike races that might be something to consider. I have suggestions if you are interested.
@Kathleen
The Blue wheeler does not deserve a place on the map. That place is a dump and the owners suck. They are the biggest creepers I have seen in the entire Hill. I stopped going in there after repeatedly grabbing expired items off the shelf. One time I got home and realize my bag of chips was expired and brought them back the next day. The guy at the register tried to say I was lying and got them from somewhere else. I showed him my receipt and he said that was not proof I purchased them from his store!!
I will be so glad when the new market opens across the street and runs the wheeler out of business!!
@John. Def add the fire station, police station and Richmond Community Hospital.
Another one is the basketball courts, playground and gardens between 29th-31st streets
How about adding the Little Free Library locations?
I like this a lot! I think something worth adding would be historical things like the oldest house in Church Hill (407 N. 27th) or the site of the Van Lew house. Even charming things like the little fairy village (address escapes me at the moment), little free libraries, the Tricycle Gardens, the yoga place on 23rd at E. Marshall, and some of our little pocket parks. Just some ideas.
Suggestions sent in by email:
The Valentine First Freedom Center & Monument / 2,200 square feet of exhibits that delve into America?s experience of religious liberty from its European antecedents through today. Corner of S. 14th and E. Cary Streets
Richmond Liberty Trail / Walking route that connects many of downtown Richmond’s historic sites, attractions and neighborhoods, including 15 national historic landmarks. This 6.2 mile (10K) trail is marked with a logo painted on the sidewalk. http://www.visitrichmondva.com/things-to-do/local-tours/liberty-trail/

Great ideas.
The Anthony Turner House on Franklin & 26th holds the honor of being the oldest surviving house in Church Hill circa 1803 – 1809. The land was purchased in 1803 and the home first appeared on the 1810 census.

I believe the 407 n 27th house might be the oldest surviving wood framed house in Church Hill circa 1812. Eric Huffstutler and his partner could elaborate on that.
Can we include the endangered view?

@Church Hillian: What new market across the street???
Deanna, think we addressed the “oldest houses” issues before in my article going by tax records. Won’t go over it here but J.J. and I are supposed to be working on a walking tour using QR codes or GPS with Smart Phones. I am not sure where he is on this right now though?
John M, the Inn at Patrick Henry’s is listed as a service – I did not know that they were an inn. Have you checked that? Just curious, thanks.
@crd – yep, the Inn is back! Check this out: http://www.innatph.com/
Why include a post office that is closed?
All of the eateries in the area have a photo of the front and a brief description of the items available for purchase….except Buzzy??
If it lists the post office, how about listing the local schools, too? Public (e.g., George Mason) and private (e.g., Central Montessori).
Also, what about listings (or some sort of resource) for renters and realtors, in case someone is thinking of moving to Church Hill?
Thanks for your feedback folks. I’ll be getting back into this over the next week or 2 and making an update.
Keep’em coming!
Don’t forget St. Patrick’s on Broad and 25th Streets. Built by Irish immigrants and dedicated in 1860.
