Plans for the Jefferson Avenue traffic circles
Following the announcement yesterday that traffic circles are planned for Jefferson Avenue, a reader brought by detailed plans for the project.
While the plans include many pages about the plantings that will go into the traffic circles, I’ve scanned the crucial pages showing the scale and placement of the circles. The plans are dated March 2015, with the exception of the image labeled “Overview” below which is dated 11/3/14.
The intent is to construct an oblong roundabout at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue, Clay Street, and 22nd Street (at Alamo BBQ). Two of the smaller style circles will be placed at Jefferson/23rd and Jefferson/24th.
In addition, a section of 22nd Street and a section of Clay Street will become one-way.

I love it. Nicely done.
Roundabouts are 1 thing but traffic circles just seem to be a game of roulette. Am I the only 1 having close calls at these. The circle on S street seems to be the worst. Also hearing about changes to 23rd and Fairfield. Not sure if roundabout or traffic circle.
I think this is great. John: do you know how far down Clay the “one way” will extend? We live at 24th and Clay. Thanks!!
@8 the 1-way on Clay (heading south, away from the Alamo ellipse) is just for the 2200 block (in front of Cyclus and the new Pocket Park on Jefferson.)

I challenge you to post up on Jefferson Ave. @ the N. 22nd/E. Clay/Jeff. Ave. intersection at 4:30>5:30 on a weekday (esp. Friday). Your question will be answered *In Full*l. I have come to grudgingly accept that, in many parts of RVA, “Red” means “GO!!”, and “Green” means “STOP!” (&/or whatever you feel like).

Once this and the “Triangle Park Project” (@ 23rd/Clay/Jeff. Ave.) are completed, Jefferson Ave. will be a precedent setting urban makeover!!
Thank you, Elaine. That’s unfortunate as the “one way” stops short of my house by a block. I suppose I speak with the city about installing a stop sign/speed bump. People fly up Clay because there are no stop signs from Jefferson until 25th and there are a lot of blind corners from parked cars.
Seems that we are not the only ones with issues around traffic circles. I’m not sure which thread to post this to, so will put it here – someone posted a complaint on SeeClickFix about circles on Hamilton Street that are incorrectly posted.

DESCRIPTION
The new roundabouts at the intersections of Hamilton St and Ellwood Ave, and Hamilton and Floyd Ave, should have yield signs at all the entrances to the roundabout. There are only yield signs on Ellwood and Floyd right now, indicating to Hamilton traffic that it always has the right of way. This is not how a roundabout works. Oncoming traffic from all directions should yield to traffic already on the circle, which not only calms traffic but reduces confusion. The situation now is more dangerous than before the traffic circles were put in.
