Proposed North 29th Bike-Walk Street would provide safe north/south corridor
The North 29th Bike-Walk Street is being proposed by East End Connects as means to connect the south end of Church Hill to the north end of the area to create a comfortable shared environment for people of all ages and abilities who walk and bike for transportation.
Phase one of the proposal would run from Libby Hill Park north on North 29th Street, run between George Mason Elementary and the water tower, and continue north across Nine Mile Road to Woodville Elementary, and on to Creighton Court. Future phases would tie in the Virginia Capital Trail at the south end and Armstrong High School and the new mountain bike skills course to the north.
Other destinations that the Bike-Walk Street would connect to either directly or using quiet neighborhood streets as spur connections include Chimborazo Elementary, Chimborazo Park, the Robinson Theater, Blue Sky Fund, Bon Secours Community Hospital, and a number of businesses and churches along the way.

How exactly would 29th be turned into a bike-walk street? Would this proposed trail or street have lights to ensure safety for bikers and walkers at all times of the day/night? I think this is a great idea since I live in Church Hill North. I would love the same safe walkability of the areas like Libby Hill Park.
Of all of the available streets for a bike-walk corridor, 29th is by far the best option because you can ride it from Creighton Court to Libby Hill and witness the extraordinary View that Named our Community Richmond – use the intersection of 29th through the park at the George Mason / Water Tower area to create biking and walking amenities to enhance the experience.
Whose idea is this? Don’t forget that N. 29th street also ran a railway along a portion of it out to the Pamunkey River and to Seven Pines. I don’t think the Richmond & Rappahannock River Railway gets any attention. And why stop at Newbourne Street (Yay Woodville!)? Why not create a bike trail along what is left of the R&RRR rail bed? I’d even think extending it out to Gaines’ Mill Battlefield Park would be a good idea. Pass it along! https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z0b3zzK438IY.kneFesDfLHGc
Just what i wanted, now i can main line straight to the projects. That was so difficult before using every street running north. …..jesus christ don’t waste my tax money on this .
Cadeho, can you ride the railbed now – MTB?
I too would be interested in knowing whose idea is this.
The group is called East End Connects. /tag/east-end-connects/
@4 – LOL
@4 – You might not want to head straight to the housing projects up north, but I think this would be an important project to get people who live there to destinations they want to go to. You know, like work, school, church, or great resources like Blue Sky Fund. Just because it’s not your preferred way to go, doesn’t mean it won’t help lots of other people.
Love the idea of extending it the bike walk street– and making a trail on the railbed– great idea Cadeho.
The next meeting for East End Connects is May 18 at Blue Sky Fund from 7-8:30 if you want to come out!
This is definitely just in the discussion phase– and just for clarification — this would just be encouraging biking and walking on this street by several measures– I think its a great connection point in the east end–
with potential to extend on both ends–
N 29th would be a thoroughfare for bikes and walkers. In the same form as maybe an interstate – take it for as long as you need but exit when you get to your destination, or need to go In a different direction. I bike to work a few days a week and I use what will soon be the Floyd Street bike corridor. I pick up Floyd halfway into my commute and exit long before the end but I stay on Floyd for as long possible. It’s pleasure to ride on the evenly paved street that has been clearly marked for bicyclists.
Cadeho – Great idea! Check out a railstotrails.org, if you have not already. I haven’t gotten a chance to ride many of these old rail beds but I plan to do so soon.
Sounds like a great place to put a bike/walk street!
I don’t quite understand this project. Will it remove all car traffic from 29th. ST? What about all the people who live and park on 29th?
East End Connects – Have you considered partnering with the schools and applying for the Safe Routes to School Grant from the VA Dep’t of Transportation? More info here: http://www.vdot.virginia.gov/programs/ted_rt2_school_pro.asp
Have any of the property owners along 29th street been consulted about this “plan”? If not, the excitement may be pre-mature and hit DOA status if parking or vehicular traffic is impacted by this.
This sounds like another solution seeking a problem. Plenty of people are safely accessing the Libby Hill Park every day; Segway tours, bus tours, bikers, pedestrians (with children / dogs / other), picnickers, etc. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street along the proposed path. I know of no injuries among people trying to walk along 29th St. Why not spend the money elsewhere where problems already exist?
Thank you John, Let’s not fix what isn’t broken.
