Richmond Bicycle Master Plan details future bike lanes in the area

05/16/2015 8:34 PM by

The incredibly detailed 145-page Richmond Bicycle Master Plan was released this past week. The plan looks at current conditions, past and current plans, and what the city would like to implement over the next 10 years.

While the vast majority of the plans projects are for other parts of the city, there are a few interesting items set for the End End over the next few years:

  • A Bike-Walk Street running along East Marshall Street/Glenwood Avenye from Mosby Street to Government Road
  • A Bike Lane on Mosby Street & East Marshall/N 35th/Glenwood from East Clay Street/N 32nd Street to O Street/ Government Rd
  • A Bffered Bike Lane for Jefferson Avenue
  • Sharrows on Mechanicsville, Fairfield, Chimborazo Boulevard, and P Street

A Bike-Walk Street is intended to make a typical street more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians through signage, traffic calming measures (such as bulb outs and speed humps), and intersection treatments. A Bike Lane is a marked lane for bicycles, immediately adjacent to the car lanes. A Buffered Bike Lane is a marked lane for bicycles, adjacent to the car lanes though with some space between the two (like on the MLK Bridge).

From the document:

This map illustrates 2007-2011 American Community Survey (ACS) block level census data including population density, percent of walk and bicycle commuters, and percent of households with zero vehicle ownership. These locations represent potential trip origin locations. More trips can be made in areas with higher population density if conditions are suitable.
