Fairy Village on Grace vandalized, reported as trash
05/19/2015 8:52 AM by John M
Jean McDaniel writes in with word that “the Fairy Village [28th and Grace] was vandalized last night. Someone stomped on (and broke) figurines, fences, a “Faerie Garden” sign and took away moss.”
Earlier in the day, an anonymous poster submitted the corner display to SeeClickFix as a “Trash/Bulk Pick-ups” request, saying “There has been junk on this corner for years. They call it the “Fairy Garden” but it is really just a bunch of trash. Please remove immdeiately it makes the whole block look junky!!”
This is the saddest news! Not only was this a tribute to a beautiful soul and longtime Church Hill community builder, it is also one of those special delights that contribute to the charm of this neighborhood. Small memorials speak volumes of the social adhesion of a community. I’m very sad to see this.
What a dick move! I loved discovering the fairy garden for the first time when I moved to the neighborhood. Hopefully the fairy gardeners know that 99.9% of people enjoyed it.
Who would do that? What would happen if we all agreed to put a little something there to build it back up?
This is such shocking news! My children and I love the fairy garden. We intentionally walk by it everytime we are out, and leave wildflowers for the gnomes. If someone doesn’t like it, they can cross the street and look at something else – but don’t ruin it for the hundreds (literally…hundreds) who enjoy it.
Sandy’s Plants in Mechanicsville has fairy garden furniture (and a whole bunch of perennial plants) for sale if anyone wants to pick up refurbishments.
That’s a shame the Fairy Garden is like a little piece of magic. I agree we should all pick up a little something and rebuild!
Disheartened, disappointed…disbelief.
Well, from the report, it looks like one of your neighbours, as they seem offended that this “trash” ruins the neighbourhood. What an idiot, I always point out the fairy garden to my son whenever we pass by.A little whimsy in our modern world, how lovely and refreshing. I sincerely hope someone can repair the damage done?
🙁
What makes someone be this kind of a-hole?
Really sad. :
Love the fairy garden and this is a shame! Side note: Can we please not resort to name calling on this site. I know this is upsetting but we are better than this.
Your postings have cheered me up!!!
There is no need to refurbish. I have glued the “Faire Garden” sign back together, and put it back, replaced the fence and broken figures and added new moss. I tend the fairy garden at least three to four times weekly. It is kept clean of weeds and trash and dog poop . Children like to put things in it and move things around. I pick broken glass out of it but otherwise do not disturb what and how stuff is placed.
I don’t know why someone would be so petty but it speakes volumns that they use the name anonymous.
Please go on click flix and speak up. Thank you!
My grandson who lives in NC asks me to take him to see the Fairy Garden every time he comes to see me. This obviously stems from an adult who has forgotten to have a little magic in their life. There are hundreds of neglected tree wells to focus on.
Just wonderful…this neighborhood is definitely changing. It used to be full of quirkiness, and now Someone has taken it upon themselves to make it generic and boring. Someone – please move away. Thanks.
It was quite a delight when a guest from Scotland and I had stumbled upon the Fairy Garden. I’m glad to hear the neighbors rallying to continue this delight. Thanks for the upkeep Jean M!!!
I never knew about this spot this until now but I’m sure my niece would love it if I took her by here to see it sometime! Who ever did this was a complete jerk.
I suspect Orcs…
RPD reported an attack on a woman renting “The Hobbit” (on BluRay) at REDBOX the other day.
@UnionHillian – I was thinking the same thing. Where’s a warrior elf when you need one?
It is horrible that someone would report this as “trash” and then destroy it. I am so glad that it has been repaired! My kids love going by the fairy garden on our walks!
Boy, I would love this coward to come forth. What an utter d00che.
I wonder if someone with knowledge of Kick Starter could begin a Kickstarter fund drive to show Jean McDaniel how much we love the fairy garden, the joy she brings to so many from this effort, and to help with maintenance costs?
Jean, thanks for all you do to bring joy into the neighborhood with your wonderful garden. I’m glad you aren’t letting the actions of an isolated a-hole discourage you. This garden is a great representation of the diversity and uniqueness that makes Church Hill special.
If you don’t like the fairy garden, you have no soul.
Or setting your newly renovated ball park on fire, Firefighters just put out backstop set ablaze.
Bill Robinson Park
This is very sad….Thank you Jean for making this corner even more special…with all of this support for your talented creations, maybe you’ll consider adding a few more special spots????
Please don’t start a fundrasier. It is not necessary.
Instead, continue to enjoy the fairy garden and bring your children ( please don,t tell them not to touch ) and friends by for a look.
Whoever reported this as trash is a sad, lonely, joyless person. The person that trashed the garden is also. I hope they are reading these postings and can get some positive vibes to move in a different direction.
Church Hill residents defend art installation after vandalism, complaint

Fairy village supporters unite! Hurray for all the love here! Those vandals got nothing on the fairy army! The fairy village was one of the first things that made me really so happy for choosing church hill as home! Makes me smile every day when we walk by! The Geese and new babies now too!
Thanks, Jean!
Thank you for being a voice for positivity Jean!
So happy to see all this support for the fairy garden. I live on 28th street and I see at least one family every day admiring the fairy garden. I can’t imagine anyone complaining about it. Jean has created something truly magical that touches people of all ages. Whoever called it trash is definitely in the minority. Thank you Jean for doing this for the community. We support you 100%!
Terra, The Fairy Garden is alive and well! Next time you are in the area, stop by, there are new additions!
That is one of the crummiest things I’ve heard of happening in our neighborhood. Beats the complaint about the flamingo a few years back, when many of us went out and got flamingoes for our front yards to show support. I look forward to the ongoing fairy “urban” renewal.
