The Student Government Association at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School is trying to raise money for the school’s 8th grade moving up dance/party. They are seeking donations, and also hosting a fundraising night at the McDonald’s on Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Teacher Antonio Guilford, the school’s SGA Liaison, explains what they are seeking to fund:

The Student Government Association of MLK is an organization that advocates on the behalf of the student body and is designed to foster leadership skills, encourage school spirit, promote academic excellence and teach democratic principles among students. As a student-run organization that represents the entire student body, SGA allows students to express concerns and ideas to assist with the betterment of the school. SGA strives to lead by example in the areas of academics, extra-curricular activities, community service, school spirit, student events, and student-teacher relations. In addition, we strive to provide an effective, enjoyable environment to bring about positive change and activities for students. This is a non-profit organization that is connected to the school and is seeking community support to keep students actively involved in school.

The SGA of MLK is working diligently to plan our annual 8th Grade dance. We are in need of candy (10 bags needed at $40.00), lunch meat (5 pounds needed at $50.00) and fried chicken (200 pieces needed at $100.00), tableware ($30.00), large can of green beans (5 needed at $30.00) and dinner rolls (100 needed at $15.00). Cupcakes (60 needed $30.00 at Sam’s Club), Fruit tray (2 needed), Chips (5 bags), and cheese and crackers (3 trays).

The total cost of the dance is $750.00 with the inclusion of DJ, decorations (balloons, table cloths, streamers, and theme décor), and tableware.

The dance will support 217 8th grade students on June 5th from 6pm- 8:30 pm.

If you are interested in supporting this effort, please contact Mr. Guilford at 780-8011 ex. 6066 or (813) 420-6920 any assistance with either item(s) will be greatly appreciated. All donors will be acknowledged in the 8th grade move on ceremony program and also at the dance.
