Can you pledge to Scoop the Poop? (“Everybody’s doo’n it!”)

From the James River Association:
Did you know that pet waste one of the top causes of harmful bacteria in our local rivers?
Here’s the Scoop:
FACT: The average-sized dog creates 3/4 lb of poop every day. That means 1,000 dogs produce 750 pounds a week! That’s a lot of harmful bacteria making it into our rivers, streams, and bay. Read more here.
FICTION: Leaving dog poop on your lawn is good for the soil.
FACT: Dog poop is NOT a fertilizer unless it is fully composted
properly with other materials!
TAGGED: pets
RIGHT ON! There seems to be a new wave of folks NOT picking up after their pets. I see it everywhere now and can’t figure out the thinking of those who just leave it there — for the rest of us to take care of.
So true Alli! Lots of young dog owners seem to be moving to the neighborhood & they don’t seem to know they must pick up after their dogs. I’ve caught a couple of people in the act of walking away leaving behind dog crap to step in. I always have an extra bag on hand to hand to them, which they definitely don’t appreciate.
I think it’s unfair to assume the problem is young dog owners. Dog owners in general should pick up their poop. It’s about coming together to achieve the goal of a clean neighborhood, not singling out people based on their age or “personal ideals”.
I understand that pet waste can cause a major pollution problem, but can anyone explain to me how it is any worse the combined sewage overflow system into the James?
I’m not arguing against picking up after your pets like a responsible person, but I think all areas of potential pollution need to be addressed.
.75×1000=750×7=5,250 pounds per week. That’s a lot of poop no matter how you measure it!
Always pick after my boys. Always have, always will.
It’s easy to just offer a bag to the “non picker upper” with “need a bag for that?”
Don’t forget the smile.
