Virgetta’s house
06/02/2015 7:45 AM by John M
Teresa got a little house history this weekend:
I was sweeping my porch today when this gal came up and told me that her family lived in my house for three generations. We walked through each room together and she pointed out where her grandmother Virgetta would sit and call out to neighbors walking by, the room where Virgetta passed away, and the spot under the stairs where there had once been an old time phone booth. We talked about Richmond history, ancestry and the value of community. It may have made my month. And this place just became a whole lot more meaningful to me
It is always wonderful to run across former owners and know more about the history. I ran across a family that lived in our house for over 30 years and provided me with color copies of the original deeds for the house dating back to the late 1800s to the 1930s. And another on Facebook who remembers as a kid of another long-term family, the layout and how things were in the north wing (now a separate residence) of our house.
After my mom passed away and we sold her house, the new owners were not all that nice. I however took my mom’s wedding shoes and buried them in the insulation in the attic with a note inside that said they had been married for over 50 years and 4 generations of our family had lived here…..i hope someone who is nice finds them 🙂
