25th Street detour causing problems for nearby neighbors

WTVR has a report on the disruption caused by the construction of the traffic circle at 25th and Nine Mile:
Since detour signs went up in her neighborhood, Patricia Chavis says they’ve had nothing but problems with drivers cutting through on North 26th street.

In the past three months, Antonio says two of his vehicles smashed by drivers trying to navigate the narrow road. His Toyota was totaled and Antonio spent $7,000 to buy his white Charger. But just one day ago the driver of a gold SUV hit that car, too.
The traffic circle is anticipated to be finished by the latter part of July.

The combination of R being narrower, the flow of Nine Mile traffic heading south on 26th, and I’m sure a few other factors, has been rough. Ready for “the latter part of July”.
I drive through this intersection daily. Since the start of the construction, I have almost been hit multiple times from people trying to blow the stop sign at 26th and S, as well as the confusion in navigating across 25th street to get back to Fairmount. VERY dangerous, and VERY unprofessional that the city didn’t notify residents about this ahead of time at all, yet there has clearly been more information about traffic circles / construction projects in lower Church Hill.
This is just one of so many issues caused by the city & this craze of construction to get ready for a bike race. Has anyone found a good way to get out of the city in a timely fashion around rush hour? The closed sidewalk on Broad approaching 64/95 is a frickin mess, made worse with people who see it & still decide to continue in the right line & then force their way over. It can take 4-5 cycles of the light by McDonald’s just to get through. Then we have Leigh Street, which has been closed for months & still more to come. I was on the detour, Jackson Street, on Tuesday only to find they are doing construction on the detour! Great job, Richmond. It’s like we’ve invited 30 people over for a nice formal dinner, there knocks at the door & we haven’t even started cooking.
You know, at one point, 26th Street was the main road between Rocketts and Meadow Bridge.
I live on 27th and this has trickled over to my block also. While I’m happy that they are doing the round about it just seems to be taking forever
Bill 3 – I have stopped attempting to go down Broad in the mornings because of what you describe. I take 25th to Main, right on 15th, left onto Franklin, then right on 14th, then right onto Broad/the ramp for 64/95. I can get from Broad and 25th to the ramp in about 6-7 minutes in the mornings which is much quicker than attempting to just go down Broad and sit through the light 8 times as you described.
#5 Bill 3 -I’m in Fulton and I have found it best to catch 295 to 95 either from White Oak or from near the airport. It takes less time than going downtown.
Seems like there have been more accidents on 26th Street in this short period of time then there has been at 25th and 9 Mile for the last decade.
Luckily most have been property damage only but lets not forget the woman that had to be removed from the overturned van by the fire dept. at 26th and S. I myself have had several close calls at 26th and S during this detour.
Are there that many horror stories from the intersection of 25th and 9 Mile? I never had trouble there the way it was.
Maybe folks can weigh in on why they think this was needed. And I don’t want to hear because its pretty.
I understand the general consensus on CH is round abouts are good. But this 1 just seems like a bad idea from the start <-IMO.
@10: If I’m not mistaken, the light at that intersection allowed only one direction of traffic to proceed at any given time making stops at the intersection frustratingly long.
Yeah, I don’t recall the intersection as dangerous so as much as stupid. The roundabout will be a nice upgrade, though I’m sure living nearby though the construction detour must really suck.
@11 You are mostly correct, with the exception of 25th street. Both ways on 25th would have the green at the same time. Not that noticeable since not much traffic would come from the north on 25th to this intersection. But my experience with the light was you only had to wait 1 cycle even at rush hour.
No one knows how to use a roundabout! Its going to be a clusterf*ck. Id rather wait at the light. This traffic circle has caused so many accidents and is expensive and unnecessary. Good job, Richmond City.
