Reminder: Lock you car doors
07/02/2015 8:43 AM by John M
Last night someone went into my husband’s unlocked car and stole his gym bag. His car was parked on the street in the 800 block of 27th.
There wasn’t anything valuable in it, and most of his items (clothes, toiletries) were strewn about the street, but it served as a reminder for us to not be careless. We always lock our cars, but the one day my husband forgets to, someone went and rifled through the car. Just goes to show you really can’t let your guard down.
From another neighbor:
My car was broken into last night and my housemate’s car broken into a couple of nights ago. We’re both pretty sure we locked our doors though.
We’re only missing some toll change.
Both of our cars were on N 31st Street at the time.
Have recently watched teenagers walking down the middle of the street in broad daylight looking in car windows and trying door handles. They weren’t particularly subtle – which makes me wonder how long until this leads to a nasty confrontation. Anyhow, they were easy to spot because they were walking in the street, but single file and almost leaning on the driver’s side doors of parked cars.
@ #3- any chance of doing video recordings of them, next time they do?
L: Did you note descriptive info and then call the police? If not, why not? If yes, thanks for being a good citizen.
Happened to me and my across the street neighbor last night on Chimbo @ E Broad
@K I watched for about 45 seconds to make sure I wasn’t mistaken and that I could describe them properly and called the police.
@WarGibFa. Yes and no. There is a neighbor who might have had them on camera, but I’m under the impression that it’s surprisingly hard to use video footage to any useful effect, legally speaking. Anyway, without going into too much detail, my situation makes it a bit difficult to record anything
Same thing happened to me last week on 31st and Q – forgetful husband, but nothing valuable in the car. I am naive about these things- is this something we should be reporting to police non-emergency, even if nothing is missing?
The police wants citizens to report ANYTHING suspicious! Its getting warmer outside which means teenagers, with nothing to do, or who are being mischievous will do things such as this. Went in my car in the 1200 block of 23rd St which has taught me a lesson to lock my door (with the remote) when i get out of my car and double check before i take my key out of the door at home. Unfortunately it’s the way of the world! Crime is everywhere. Look around your house regularly just to make sure everything is secured or not out of place.
My husbands car was also gone through, 2nd time in 2 weeks, the door is broken and won’t lock, guess they didn’t care for all the sea shells, a million scratched CD’s and his trash collection. Did let the police know though.
Not clear why some people wonder about calling the police. If you see somebody somewhere [s]he shouldn’t be, it’s 911 time. Always.
And get out your camera if you can — stills or video might capture identifying info you won’t recall, and might help the police find the criminal (evidentiary value later can be another matter).
@11 I had the same question earlier this year, actually.. One should report even the small stuff so that the police’s aware of the potential problem spots. If we don’t care about our own neighborhood, who does?
I asked John to post this on CHPN, but we did not report to police.
We reported to the police when someone stole our lawn mower, and smashed the windshield of my hubs’ car (separate incidents), and obviously nothing’s changed. The only thing that seems to be beneficial is just letting neighbors know what’s happening so they can be more vigilant.
I know police are aware of the kinds of crime happening in the neighborhood, and they do have a presence, but they can’t be everywhere all the time. It seems like our only defense is to be vigilant and look out for one another.
We had the same thing happen on the very last block (1300th) of 37th street. Ours is usually a very quiet spot in church hill. Missing toll change, a pair of cheap sunglasses, and my partner’s expired debit card was the total damage. Weird though, because I could’ve sworn we locked the doors the night before. Also the driver’s side door and the trunk were not completely shut after being gone through. Additionally, there was a mysterious basketball behind the rear wheel so I definitely agree with the assumption that it’s a bunch of bored punk kids.
It could’ve been a lot worse. But is still really irritating.
