Church Hill is “The Brooklyn of Virginia”
FWIW – a Thrillist piece on The Brooklyn of Every State gives a nod to Church Hill as the Virginia representative:
We rounded up the most Brooklyn ‘hood in every single state, based on metrics including trendy restaurants, “craft” cocktail bars, bike friendliness, and, of course, urban expansion. By the time you finish reading the list, they probably won’t be cool anymore, so hurry up:

Church Hill is a gorgeous old historic district with cobblestone streets and gas lanterns that’s currently in the middle of a massive urban renewal (for better or worse). Mezcal cocktails and breakfast poutine can be found at The Roosevelt, which boasts a James Beard semifinalist in the kitchen. The stroopwafels are at Dutch & Co. The Sunday supper clubs are at The Dog and Pig Show, while the ceramic exhibits are at the Eric Schindler Gallery.

Billie…what you said! On a more serious note, I recommend viewing “Gut Renovation”, a film by Su Friedrich. It is all about the ugly underbelly of the transformation of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After you see it, you’ll be glad Church Hill only has superficial similarities to Brooklyn.

#9 good – but if you follow die hipster, you know the above and below the lines of brooklyn. Most people, even in 2000, didn’t feel Wburg was part of brooklyn anymore. I was just there a month ago. Compared to pre millennial, it’s a diff world. But the PennsaTucky flyover states trust fund kids parents created Wburg, not the actual denizens. Mommy-i-Want-to-Be-An-Artist-Fund-Me BS.
Eh. Montrose Heights and Fulton Hill are the Detroit of Virginia. And everyone knows that Detroit is way cooler than Brooklyn for the hippest of the hip.
I live roughly half the year in Brooklyn, and half the year in Church Hill. It’s true both communities have good restaurants, but I’d hate to see Church Hill getting distracted by some attempt to emulate Brooklyn. We have our own unique culture here that doesn’t depend on what happens in an over-priced and over-blown borough of New York.
By the way, Brooklyn is far more than just Williamsburg.
Funny how The Hill Café use to win award after award but now, you never hear about them nor see mention of their existence. What happened? Are they not trying to compete and maintain a name for themselves?
I like to think Church Hill is the Church Hill of Va. Ive lived in Brooklyn, Atlanta, Cleveland, Columbus, DC. We’re our own spot. Not some other kinda like someplace else place…even though Brooklyn is cool…the Nets, Flatbush, DUMBO, the Q, South Kensington…
@Juliellen… I feel bad for Detroit but understand that there is an attempt going on now to try and bring it back, even without all of the car factories that moved on.
