An ugly incident on 37th Street
A neighbor on 37th Street sent this in last night, and I don’t even know really what to say for the lead in here:
A few nights ago while sitting on my porch of 45 years, a white truck with two young white males yelled out “hey nigga “. It caught us off guard as we were thinking someone needed directions; which is usually the case.
My family has lived in our home since Fulton bottom was destroyed. My family has owned businesses in Church Hill and still do. My father was born in a house on 33rd st… he is almost 70 years old. I don’t understand this type of behavior and I hope it doesn’t occur again. It’s something that has never happened to us in this area.
We kinda laughed it off because we were in disbelief. Then I thought back a couple of weeks ago, my cousin was sitting in her yard in Highland Springs and a group of teens yelled out “nigga bitch” while holding a Confederate flag.

Alas, we can all expect to see more of this. Racism remains alive and well in America.
I’m so sorry this happened to you.That is disgusting. I hope that folks can learn to just get along with each other instead of offering these disgusting displays of hatred. Doing hateful things like that is a waste of energy.
As long as ignorance exists, so will racism. Unfortunately, there will always be ignorant people in the world. I’m sorry this incident took place.

This is horrifying and so sad, and I’m very sorry you had to experience this. It is so much harder to hate than to love. Please don’t let the behavior of a tiny-minded, hateful few keep you from continuing to enjoy and be happy in the neighborhood you helped to establish.
Try to grab a license plate number, if possible, and report them. I’m not sure if the police can do anything, but better than letting these ignorant people continue to do this without any repercussion.
We, your neighbors, stand with you. There is fear in the air, bringing out pathetic behavior. Racists and those who put so much stock in the flag symbolizing hate to many of us, are afraid they’re losing ground in their angry cause. The good news is that they ARE losing ground! The majority of coming generations are much more accepting and open to folks who may not “look” like them. Our world is changing, one generation at a time, and that frightens those who are holding onto hate for dear life. We have a wonderful community and we are with you.

Church Hill is a special place and ignorant and hateful people are not welcome here. My family has lived on Church Hill for a long time. I live in Oakland, California now. Growing up in Church Hill taught me to build community, strive for civil rights, and reject violence. Hold on to your neighborhood and community, ‘Hillians.
Yet another example of ignorant behavior by folks who wrap themselves in that hateful flag. I am so sorry you and your cousin were treated so shamefully.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is that this is coming out of kids. No one is born a racist- it’s a learned behavior.
This makes me want to throw up. I am so sorry that you had to experience that.

This is just sick and even more so for your cousin. A few backward rednecks taking advantage of the “Confederate” situation to show their ignorance, making the problem worse. I only hope it doesn’t go any further than words.
