Lehigh Cement silos coming down next month
07/29/2015 7:15 AM by John M
From the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation:
See those silos? They’re coming down next month, and a lovely grassy spot along the Trail will take their place. It’s about two pedal strokes from the soon-to-be Stone Brewery Bistro and about a half mile from the Boathouse, Conch Republic, Bottoms Up Pizza, the Southern Railway Taphouse, and all the other restaurants in Shockoe Bottom. We’re giddy just thinking of the possibilities.
Are we sure there won’t be some eleventh hour effort to stop the progress because the silos have some sort of cultural or heritage significance? HAHA!
Ridiculous that we’d take down these MARKERS of a culture that we ALL share. And for what??? Progress? This sort of thinking is what gets you a nice baseball stadium instead of a grassy field. Or a helpful transportation system instead of a line of pawn shops and left turn lanes. Time to recognize what is truly important, Richmond.
Very excited about this trail!
I guess I’m just confused why it needs to be torn down when it would be so expensive to replace and it is functional. The trail goes behind it anyways. I’ve never cared for it, but it seems wasteful.
We must keep these silos. Cement has played a pivotal role in our nation’s development. Our cement heritage is at risk of being lost to future generations. We must not only presevre these silos, but we should build a visitor center and museum to better interpret these historic artifacts while archeologists excavate to better understand what occurred at the site. Future generations must never forget the glories and pains caused by cement. Let’s convene a series of charettes and make this happen! The City will probably pay for it by building a ballpark or training camp too, meaning it won’t cost taxpayers a dime. It never does, after all.
Time for the view tax! Mission accomplished.
Speaking of breweries….did you notice that the City resolved the food tax issue with Hardywood Brewery 2 days after they announced they were moving most of their capacity to Goochland?
I don’t see why they are so bothersome, and it will cost money to tear them down. Would be cool if they could be reused somehow (perhaps as climbing walls…? something that benefits the public, anyhow), especially if that would be cost comparable or cheaper than tearing them down.
Unique trumps pretty.
Then again, I doubt anyone will shed tears over them, so…whatever
@BAF ???
@BAF- Don’t really know what happened there, emoji turned into ? Loved your post, best laugh of my day!
I stand with BAF. Don’t tear down these monuments to industry! We will be holding a rally down by the river on Aug. 15th. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, however primary consideration will be given to views raised by members of the Concrete community.
Are we sure we can’t turn them into brewery vats???
@Bill3 OMG. Killin’ it. As long as they aren’t in the union.
@Bill3 – Hysterical!! Thank you!
