Parking during the UCI Road World Championships

The Richmond 2015 site has been updated with information about street closures and parking restrictions on a day-by-day basis for the duration of the event.
Parking restrictions along the Road Circuit (which winds through Libby Hill and Church Hill) will go into effect at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, and remain in place through 4:40 PM on Sunday, September 27.
More questions? There will be an information session on Tuesday, August 11th at 6:30 PM at the St. John’s Church Parish House.
Has anyone heard whether or not the city is developing a parking plan for all of the displaced vehicles, race support vehicles, and tourist/spectator vehicles in our neighborhood? There are only so many parking places to be found in Church Hill on a non race day.
Chimbo: You’re being facetious, right?
@1 – the city has a plan. It’s called Siebert’s.
@1, nope doesn’t sound like it. I went to the info session at noon today at the public library. Someone asked where he could park near Libby Hill Park, which the speaker had just touted as an excellent viewing point. The response was, “oh just go a little east of there, there’s plenty of parking.” At that point I was just sort of shaking my head.
Someone else asked are there shuttle services around the course, answer is nope. BUT they’ve partnered with GRTC and for thirty-five bucks, you can get a pass which will let you ride GRTC for the entire event to anywhere GRTC goes. Nope, you can’t access GRTC through the Richmond2015 website, you go to GRTC’s site….
@4 Just east of Libby Hill Park? Wow, you’re right to shake your head, that makes no sense at all. Park in the river?
My concern will being able to get in and out from my house to work. I work at Riverfront Plaza Towers on Byrd Street, take Canal to 14th and down Dock home and up either 18th to Broad or 21st up to Franklin and then 23rd on up to Marshall. On my way to work which some days my shift starts at 9:00, I go down Broad to 14th and Canal on up. But it looks like many of these streets will be blocks so, how in the hell am I to get to and from work which is only 1-1/2 miles away without having to drive all over the city?
@5 Sugar Bottom maybe? Or go down to Chimbo Park and find a space, maybe, if the residents don’t take ’em all.
To their credit, they had a RPD officer to answer the question about people trying to camp in Libby Hill Park…I’m not real clear on it, but I think they are going to try to be nice. Like, it’s against the rules but we will try to be nice….and the VIP section that is blocked off in the park will be a tent pretty much along 29th and Franklin, roughly 80 x 100 feet. Rest of the park is a beer garden, roped off for ABC purposes.
@6 Eric, they were adamant that everyone will be able to access work as needed. Sounds like you need to adjust your route. Go on the website and take a look. Then figure on going to a meeting, there’s one at the library at 10 a.m. this Saturday.
Word of warning: at the meeting, the Q and A period came with the warning that all questions needed to be of interest to all. First question thrown out was “I live at such and such address” and the moderator said, nope not taking that one. So go to the meetings, but be prepared to wait around to ask those types of questions after. They are timing the meetings to exactly one hour, and it went off like clockwork.
We can bitch all we want on this blog, but this thing is coming anyway, might as well be ready for it. @3 My motto is, don’t give your money to Seibert’s!
IF we get the hundreds of thousands of visitors they expect to get, well,,.,how long before people just start popping their cars over the curb and parking in the grass at the other parks? That is what I am hoping to prevent.
From what I can tell, the city campaigned for these races, won them, and then stopped planning for 2 years, and only returned to that last month. There are so many foreseeable problems that have yet to be addressed.
The 100,000’s of thousands of people you are hearing about is a misnomer. There will not be 400,000 people here for a single day. That is the total attendance over the entire event when you add up the daily attendance. So maybe 30,000 people a day including support and racers?
As a scale, RIR draws about 90,000-100,000 people. A Va Tech football game, 66,000. UVA football, 61,000.
It appears the expressway ramp at 11th and Canal Street will be open all the time, so Eric you might need to drive a bit to get on the interstate to make that ramp to Riverfront.
The restaurants and businesses downtown are going to have a material logistics issue and that will probably have to be done after midnight or on foot. Ditto trash pick ups.
Getting around by bike may be the best solution that week.
Anybody have a number on how many people come to the Irish Festival on a given day?
Ah…even though the improvements are a bit late on the citys end and being made now due to the upcoming races, things could be worse. Yes it will be an inconvenience, but as Louis C.K. once said “…first world problems…”
I understand that there will be parking down along Williamsburg Ave. and side streets there. That is Williamsburg Ave., not Road – it’s what forks off of Main St. under Libby Hill Park. Not sure if that includes the Stone site, but I have been told that all parking restrictions down there are being relaxed for the duration. So they DO have a plan in place after all. I really think the organizers and city are trying to make this work.
