Jasmine China wants to get the word out about Sickle Cell

Jasmine China will be hosting a blood drive through Cells of Life: The Jasmine Cares Project to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease.

“It is our goal to #getthewordout about Sickle Cell Disease and how it affects our community. Some have never heard of Sickle Cell and not even sure if they are carriers of the trait,” writes her mother Nicole China.

Fourteen-year-old Jasmine, former Chimborazo Elementary Student, herself suffers from Sickle Cell Disease. She is a patient with Children’s Hospital of Richmond and has had well over 100 hospitalizations and hundreds of blood transfusions in her battle with Sickle Cell.

Almost 300,000 children are born with a form of sickle-cell disease every year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, but also in other parts of the world such as the West Indies and in people of African origin elsewhere in the world. In 2013 it resulted in 176,000 deaths (up from 113,000 deaths in 1990).
