Can you help clean-up the area bike and running trails this Saturday?

A conversation following a piece exploring the off-road running and bicycle trails last October has spurred a trail work meet-up this Saturday.
Want to meet some of your great neighbors? Can you help with trash pick up and trail assessment? Meet at the Statue of Liberty in Chimborazo Park at 9 AM this Saturday, October 10. Bring your own gloves, trash bags, or other applicable tools.
Bring whatever tools you will/can use. I think we should look to maintain the trail’s natural but urban vibe and respect the trail work that’s been done previously.
Is this part of a sanctioned group effort or a group of citizens clearing the trails?
BTW, if you want to learn how to build environmentally sustainable trails, this class is for you. This is the group responsible for building and maintaining the trails in conjunction with the JRPS areas such as Buttermilk, Forest Hill Park, North Tail, Dogwood Dell and the “Poop Loop”.

rvaMORE will be holding a Trail Building 101 class on Saturday, October 24th in Forest Hill Park. Please join us to learn the basics of trail building and why we do things in the James River Park the way we do. The morning classroom session include discussion about terrain, soil, trail design, construction techniques, user groups, the relationship between rvaMORE and the land manager that we work with and more. Then in the afternoon we’ll have a hands on section where we’ll be rerouting a section of trail in Forest Hill Park.
There is no cost for this class and lunch will be provided, but the class size is limited to 24, so please sign-up early to reserve your spot.
When: 8:30am – 4:00pm Saturday, October 24th 2015
Where: Stone House in Forest Hill Park (note: please allow extra time for parking due to Forest Hill Farmer’s Market)
Bring: Notebook & Pen for classroom notes. Gloves, study shoes and work clothes for hands-on session.
@formerlibbyhillresident – local volunteers
@formerlibbyhillresident, a few of us are part of East End Connects and are working to improve bike-ped connections in the East End. I’m interested in the trail building class.
Very nice. It’s good to see some work being done. I checked with our group to see if this was one that I missed. It isn’t.
I have been asked to pass this thank you and friendly note onto the volunteers from Parks and Rec:
“We need to tell this group they are welcome to pick up litter and move debris off the trail, etc. which these trails really need. However they should not be doing any dirt work of any sort, including raking which I saw was mentioned without supervision/ guidance from us (city or More)”
What they don’t want to create is more erosion of the trials by raking them. The leaves on the trails aren’t necessarily a bad thing given how wet everything is.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the info, FLHR. We will take your advice and be extra careful.
This is strictly trash pick up and moving limbs (but not the logs) to the side of the the trails. NO leaf removal, if for no other reason than bcause it’s pointless. NO trail work bc we don’t have anyone who knows anything about trail building. I have reached out to RVA More and I am also signed up for the trail building course on 10/24!
Me, too, Kathleen! East End might have a fledgling trail crew in the works!
