PROFILE: East District Family Resource Center
Established in 1998 as part of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s work with the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Richmond on the Children’s Urban Mental Health Initiative, the East District Family Resource Center’s mission is to “provide access to services and opportunities in order for East End residents to thrive, be healthy, and engaged.” Succinctly, the FRC offers a on-the-ground support to our neighbors in need:
- emergency assistance programs (emergency food pantry, career clothing closet, energy assistance),
- education & outreach initiatives (GED host site, YHELI after-school programs, health wellness initiative, computer classes),
- career & workforce development (entrepreneurship training program),
- and work to promote positive family development.

The FRC’s Executive Director is first-generation college graduate and former John F. Kennedy High School valedictorian Brandi Daniels. Daniels was recently selected to receive 2016 Mid-Atlantic HEC Health Equity HERO Award, a recognition for individuals “who go above and beyond the call of duty, to reduce health disparities and improve health equity in their community, state, or region.”
Interested in helping? Volunteers are always welcome. Every dollar helps support workforce development initiatives, and you can donate non-perishable food items anytime during normal business hours. Contact FRC for more information.

So, this very nice CHPN attention to the East District Family Resource Center, first offered yesterday morning, currently has 6 likes and no formal posts before mine, while the attention offered last night to the Trader Joe’s store, which doesn’t have a shot of happening in the CHPN footprint, already has 183 likes + 40 posts.
I think all these numbers say a lot about the health of our “village” – I noticed them and thought I would share.
