No leaf collection for the East End until January
11/09/2015 6:45 AM by John M
Vacuum collection for the 2015-2016 season begins November 30, but won’t get to the East End until January.
If you require bagged leaf collection, the city will collect up to 25 bags on your normal trash collection day. During your neighborhood’s vacuum cycle, the city will collect an unlimited number of bagged leaves.
Vacuum Leaf Collection Program Guidelines
- Rake leaves to your property line.
- Do not rake leaves into the street.
- Leaves must be placed out for collection by the start date indicated for your route.
- Keep leaf piles less than 2 feet in height.
- Keep leaves away from ditches, pipes, and culverts.
- NO DIRT, ROCKS, METAL OR BRANCHES.

A lot of rules to citizens yet very little from the City. Sounds historic.
Had the leafs fallen before the bike race, every single one would have been sucked up promptly.
I see this as a good thing. No towing around the holidays, and most of the leaves will actually have a chance to fall before being picked up. Last year leaves were still falling after they were picked up…
Looks like we should just bag them now. There’s a ton of leaves out there now (and they are a hazard when combined with the rain) and I doubt there will be anything left to collect come January.
Yeah, right. Everyone just leaf blows leaves into the street from the sidewalks but others just push all of their leaves into it leaving people having to wade through them parking. If it will be January for actual pickup, you know they will be rotten, slimy, frozen, and slippery when wet. Too bad they closed down the landfill near us after the earthquake. That was convenient to haul leaves and branches to.
#6 – Eric, actually the East Richmond Road Landfill & Convenience Center is still open for branches, leaves, etc. They also take appliances and hazardous stuff like oil, batteries, etc. Call them at (804) 646-4706.
Compost them! I’ve been composting my leaves in my yard for years. My garden thanks me and I have one less thing to bitch about.
No drama here. I just look at it like #myblockRVA and I’ll treat it like snow and clean in front of my house. Bag them now. It’s good exercise (squats!).
Just in time for them to be delayed because they use the same trucks for snow removal. It takes several days to change all the equipment from leaf collection to snow removal and sanding.
