Next version of Nile coming to Church Hill
When I first heard that 306 North 29th Street had been sold last March, I pined for Mel from Curry Craft to open a take-out Indian joint or for the then-homeless Shoryuken Ramen folks move in – something different, casual, delicious… It turns out that dreams really can come true: after 10 years of service first on Laurel Street at VCU and then with Portrait House in Carytown, the Nile will be bringing their Ethiopian faire to Church Hill.
The new spot will be a home base for catering and food prep for local markets (like Ellwood’s), and as a “take-out and quick grab spot”, says Yoseph Teklemariam, one of the owners, and that they will “continue to focus on natural and organic, vegetarian and vegan foods.”
They hope to be open by March 2016. Need your fix before that? Keep an eye out for pop-up dinner nights featuring the Nile between now and then.

Wow! Just Wow! The Teklemariam family’s cuisine has been a favorite of ours wherever we could find it! Now it will just be a few blocks from home. What an amazing way to start the week!
How soon can we start placing our orders?
What great news!
Wonder what ever happened to the Str8 Outta Philly guys?
Are they going to have any meat options?
Re: The Dim Sum place. That restaurant was supposed to be in the ground floor of the new apartment building that will be coming to Church Hill north. As I understand it, the folks heading that eatery up have pulled out. So, the building is coming, but no dim sum place. Bummer. Still, here’s hoping that building finds another business tenant that could bring more positives to our neighborhood.
@Robbie – I’ve helped open a few restaurants. If they can do this by March, they’ll be doing well.
Thank goodness for more veggie options! There’s already enough meat in this neighborhood to support our own factory farm.
Robbie…i heard that STR8 Outta guys left old premises because landlord wouldnt keep up with agreed upon repairs/maintaince. Rumor has it they are still looking for a new place. My girlfriend and i talk about their steak Phillies constantly. None in Richmond to match…
