Can you help remove and burn the rose bushes in Chimborazo Park?
11/17/2015 7:15 AM by John M
From the Friends of Chimborazo:
I have recently been notified by the city that many if not most of the roses planted over the last 2 years in Chimborazo Park have caught a highly contagious rose disease and need to be removed and burned. I need help to accomplish this sad task and am seeking volunteers to come out saturday from 10 to noon to help cut them down and dig up the roots.
I think shovels and pruning tools are it. I have a couple of spare shovels.
Thanks
Awww. What a sad headline
What’s the name of this “highly contagious” rose disease? I live just a few blocks away and want to check out my roses. Thanks!
I dont know the name, and the information is conflicting, but Maymont pulled up most of its roses a few years ago for the same disease.
You can recognize from the new growth areas on the palnt with deep red branches with skinny, twisted, and malformed leaves.
So sad to hear this. The rose garden is a beautiful section of the park. The disease is called Rose Rosette Disease. Here’s a link to the Virginia Cooperative Extension RRD page.

Thanks for the link Anne! I noticed the odd growth on my roses this past season and wasn’t able to find the cause. Looks like I will be cutting mine out this weekend as well! Do they really need to be burned or will some contractor bags do the job?
I can help on Saturday. I have some tools that I will bring.
