Volunteer on MLK National Day of Service

01/07/2016 9:42 AM by

The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday on Monday, January 18, 2016, is a National Day of Service, and a time to re-commit ourselves to serving each other and our communities. This Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps solve problems.

Registration is now open at Hands On Greater Richmond for MLK Day volunteer opportunities. Search all MLK Day opportunities and sign up here.

There will also be a Day of Service at the East End Cemetery a few days later:

Join Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and Richmond National Battlefield Park as we continue to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a day of community service at East End Cemetery. This event compliments the MLK Day program held at Maggie L. Walker NHS on January 18th, “One Stone at a Time: Reclaiming Richmond’s Past at East End Cemetery.”

East End Cemetery is one of four historic African American cemeteries in Richmond, and is the final resting place for many prominent African American Richmonders from the turn of the century. Over the years, it has faced problems such as trash dumping and overgrowth. For the day of service, we will help East End Cemetery Clean Up & Restoration Project restore the cemetery by cleaning trash and cutting away plants and overgrowth.
