MEDIA ADVISORY

GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS TO HOST EMERGENCY STATE OF THE COMMUNITY ACTION SUMMIT

WHAT:
On the heels of recent shootings in the Richmond metropolitan region, multiple area organizations are calling for an emergency State of The Community Action Summit to create community-driven solutions for the violence plaguing Richmond neighborhoods. Coaches Against Violence Everywhere (CAVE), Mothers Against Violence, United Communities Against Crime, Great Richmond L.O.C., James River Metro Chapter SCLC, Have A Heart 4 The Homeless, and the Richmond Tenant Organization have teamed up and are seeking community input in fighting the escalating violence in the region, as well as the social ills devastating local communities.

Community activist J.J. Minor says: “Almost on a daily basis, we receive reports of some act of violence occurring in our neighborhoods. We are calling on community members to come to the table and not only let their voices be heard, but work with us as we develop solutions to the violence as well as the social ills we contend with constantly. We can’t wait for others to make our neighborhoods the strong, vibrant communities we all want and deserve. We have to take action ourselves. Every member of the community—whether you are 17 or 71—has to act now and with a sense of urgency if we are to truly make a difference.”

Minor says the State of the Community Action Summit will be the first in a series of discussions resulting in actionable recommendations for residents and City leaders to implement.

“Community” Clovia Lawrence and Danielle Spencer Davis, who was known as “Dee” from the popular 70s sitcom What’s Happening will serve as moderators for the discussion.
