Rally for public schools set for Monday

04/09/2016 4:21 PM by

Before City Council meets Monday night to consider a heavy slate of budget related items, there will be a rally on the front steps of City Hall calling for higher funding in support of the public schools. There is a related online petition aiming to collect 2,000 signatures prior to the City Council meeting.

Students at high schools across the city are planning a walk out during their last class of the day:

The students hope the bold move will grab city officials’ attention and move them to find a way to fill the $18 million budget gap the district faces after city administrators denied a request for additional funding for the fiscal year starting in July.

The RPS administration last week proposed closing 4 elementary schools and Armstrong High School, and consolidating 3 unnamed specialty schools to close the budget gap.
