Leaked emails detail safety concerns at MLK Middle School
05/12/2016 8:18 AM by John M
Almost 2 years to the day after teachers at MLK Middle School decried conditions at the school and amid rumors that Principal Scarborough will not be returning next year, nbc12 ran story yesterday on detailing safety concerns at the school:
In a series of emails, Richmond School Board member Shonda Harris-Muhammad tells school superintendent Dr. Dana Bedden, in part, “Teachers need help,” adding, “We had a student slammed on his head, we have had teachers pushed into doors, we have had students dragged down the hallway by their hair, and none of this is placed in the safety and security report!”
Principal is def. not returning next year. It was told to teachers during a meeting over a month ago.
So very glad I fought and won! got my kid bused to the Fan for Middle school. This school is creating felons.
I always hear a lot of lamenting about school facilities holding back our educational outcomes. This school is practically brand new – right? My experience has always been that quality teachers and parents that reinforce the learning and discipline at home are what lead to the best outcomes. I understand that parenting is harder for single and/or low income parents. But either showing indifference/apathy or making excuses for your kids rather than backing up the school teacher is a recipe for failure.
My son was unfortunate enough to go to this school about 5 weeks. I put him in Christian school. He was one of the only Caucasian students in the school. He went through hell. MLK is full of wanna be thugs. It’s never one on one bullying either. It’s a pack of students on one student. The parents defend their bad kids. Children obviously get their behaviors from watching their parents. My son said that on the first of every month, the other students would be bragging about getting their food stamps. These same kids wear Jordans to school and make fun of the other students’ if they don’t. I’m so glad my son doesn’t have to go there anymore.
A local article from May 2014 “…Blasts Unruly Students At New School:” http://www.styleweekly.com/richmond/teachers-blast-unruly-students-at-new-school/Content?oid=2075998. A “…bold new proposal…” for these long standing problems has been made that is supposed to fix things at this new middle school. The proposal calls for building two additional $chool$ to promote diversity: http://wric.com/2016/05/30/theres-a-ruckus-going-on-community-activist-pushing-to-break-up-mlk-middle-school/
I went to MLK for 6th and 7th Grade and plan on going for 8th. It’s not a bad school. If people’s children stay in the classroom maybe they’ll learn something.
In my 2 years going there I learned algebra not pre but algebra. I’ve started to learn calculus and they helped me with dividing decimals. Those are the most major things not to mention cell division, Tertiary consumers, and figurative language. So not a bad school, final report card B, B, B, B, B, C
Before you say “wow your so incoherent you think those are good grades”, I want to let you know I was in all AP classes, and had to put up with family members dying, so until you can understand that you can’t judge MLK. I’m also a student ambassador of the school.
