Can you help bring goats to Evergreen Cemetery?
The Friends of East End Cemetery have launched a fundraising campaign towards being able to rent goats to help clean up the overgrown cemetery:
East End and Evergreen Cemeteries are historic African American cemeteries in Richmond and Henrico County, VA. They have suffered from decades of neglect, but volunteers are working hard to restore them to their former glory, clearing brush, removing trash, and rescuing long-buried headstones.
We would like to rent goats to help clean up East End and Evergreen Cemeteries. Using goats will greatly speed up the process of clearing all the vegetation in both cemeteries. We need at least $2000 to rent the goats for a week to clear 5 acres. As soon as we get the funds we can make arrangements to rent the goats.
You guys can just borrow our 4 goats…
Athena, if you would like to bring your goats to Church Hill they can stay overnight in my goose pen and be taken care of! The City of Richmond does not have enough money or people to keep the parks mowed. Contact me at 780-3521
I would glad to organize a system, and vounteers, to catalogue headstones, create a photo archive, and schematic drawings of the two cemeteries. It would also be help to take oral histories from descendants — if they can be found. Please let me know. I would be willing to organize a small group to do field work in the fall. Field work is best done once the goats clear the site but documenting the goats at work would be an interesting preface to the project.
